Wishing this Summer was over.....

Hi Everyone,

Well this Summer is going down as one to forget. I was trying to get out onto the road to continue my Walkabout. It's been one delay after another this year!!

The weather this Spring and early Summer was bad (tornado's & flooding)- so I had to wait on getting on the road. In June, I found out I needed to have some work done on SUV before I could go. Got the work done- then on June 28th, my beloved Miss MayMay (my dog- she was 8yrs old in May) passed away unexpectedly.

On July 6th, I was finally able to start out. I basically drove straight through to Michigan, with night stops in Ohio and Indiana. I was able to see a lot of southern Michigan- into Indiana.
I camped at the National Dunes Park in Indiana for 3 days. Went to see Lake Michigan which was about 5 mins away from where I was staying. I enjoyed my time there though it was very hot.

On July 11th, I was back on the road heading to Illinois to get a copy of a marriage certificate for my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather for the family tree.
While I was heading there, a strong thunder storm came raging through. It left a lot of damage. Many trees and telephone poles snapped off and littering the roads. Personally I think a micro-burst came through. It covered all of upper Illinois and lower Wisconsin. Many areas were without power and the corn fields were flattened.

During the evening of Monday (7/11), I was heading for the Dells in Wisconsin and looking for a place to spend the night- when my check engine light came on. I found a Walmart that had an auto center. They told me it was a transmission component slippage, I stayed in the parking lot for the night not wanting to risk any damage.

The next morning I drove to a local GMC dealership and they checked it out for me.
Indeed the transmission was getting ready to go (even though I had no indications that there was a problem other than the light).
I asked if I could make it back home with it. The service manager said he didn't know- but to get as close to home as I could. He strongly suggested taking Interstate & not to go over 55 mph, so as to have the least amount of miles to cover and not to put extra stress on the engine.

So on Tuesday (7/12) @ 8:30 A.M. I was on my way home.
I was really disappointed- but tried to look at the bright side I got 2 more states done....so now only have 11 to go.
I was nervous about getting stuck out on the road so I pushed it and practically drove straight home (which my back has made me pay for since LOL). I arrived home 11:45 P.M. on Wednesday (7/13).

I am grateful that I wasn't out further and that I was able to make it home safely.
I am now currently waiting for parts to come in, in order for the transmission to be repaired.

I may take a short trip to Maine in November and a quick trip to NC in December- but we will see.

I will try again next year to once again head west and get my last 11 states done.

I have some pictures to post- but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Waiting for Spring to arrive!!

Hi Everyone, It is April Fools Day! And we got snow to start the month off!! It has been a long and snowy winter. I had prayed for a lot of snow and boy did we get it. We had over 80 inches from mid December until March. But now I am ready for Spring, like everyone else. I am starting to prep for my next journey. If all goes well, I will be heading to Alaska by the end of May- beginning of June. I have 13 states left to go to reach my goal of seeing all 50 states!! I hope to be able to finish this goal with this next trip. I have a new trailer. My brother Wade bought it for me. It’s a toy hauler that is being overhauled starting this weekend, by Wade and my son Dave. We are setting it up to meet my needs for the road. I have my maps and passport ready to go!! October 2, 2010 - November 14, 2010 Trip to Florida with Mom

Mom and I made a trip to Florida to see her brother Danny and his wife Judy. We took our time going down and made several stops both on the way down and back to visit with family and friends. We had wonderful weather - only rained 2 x’s in that 6 week period. We drove 6,315 miles in the 6 weeks. We took close to 9,000 pictures, after taking out all the bloopers ended up with 4,719 pictures in the end. We had many great adventures…so come along and see some of the things we got to experience. 10/2/10- Spent the night in Scranton, PA

10/3/10- Spent the night in Westminster, MD. Visited with my friends Debbie & Barb and their families. We had a nice visit and enjoyed a nice dinner together.

10/4/10- Spent the night in Statesville, NC

10/5/10- Stopped at Chimney Rock in Asheville, NC

10/5/10- Arrive in Crossville, TN at the home of our friends the Worricks

10/6/10- The Worricks took us to see a 7 story tree house. David Worrick and I climbed to the top floor, but I decided to stay out of the crows nest!! LOL We also visited a gourd farm and a local Farm stand.

10/7/10- Mom & I headed back out heading south to GA. We were on Signal Mountain (Rt 27) in TN, when we saw a spaceship shaped house. I felt like I was in an episode of “Lost in Space” LOL We spent the night in Macon, GA

10/8/10- We were now in Jacksonville, FL. There was a motorcycle rally going on across the street from where we were staying- a lot of bikes where there. 10/9/10- We arrived in West Palm Beach. We were visiting Amy and her family. Amy had just had a baby boy (Steve) so this was my first time meeting him.

10/11/10- 11/5/10 - Mom and I spent this time in Hudson, FL at my Aunt & Uncles home. We would make many trips to the Hudson Beach, also had a family gathering (Mia & Bob, and Denise & Michael). We took a trip to Citra, FL to meet my cousin Betty’s family (from my Dad’s side of family). I was also able to meet up with my friends Sue & Warren Wing. On the 4th I met up with my cousin Mia and we spent a “girls day out”. We had a lot of fun checking out Dunedin, FL (pronounced dun-e-din [not] doon-did) LOL - then we went of and had lunch at the Greek Fishing/Sponge Village in Tarpon Springs, FL.

11/5/10 - Mom and I headed back to East coast to Lantana, FL. We were picking up Amy’s girls the next day and heading to Key West.

11/6/10- Off to Key West we headed. We 1st made a stop at the Coral Castle in Homestead, FL. It was a very interesting place. A man back in early 1930's made a castle (home) out of coral. For more information please see: http://coralcastle.com/

We then head to Key West. Everyone was impressed with the 7 mile bridge and the beautiful waters. We took a tour of the Key West area, then had a relaxing dinner. After dinner we all walked down to Mallory Wharf to watch the sunset. We got the girls back home at midnight- what a long day!

11/7/10- Mom and I were starting to make our way back home. We stopped once again to visit with Betty and her family- then spent the night back in Jacksonville. 11/8/10- We arrived in Savannah, GA. Mom & I took a trolley tour of the city and then spend a few hours down on the Riverfront. This is a great place. It reminds me of Boston in some ways. It’s a very busy area. Lots of shops and restaurants. There are paddleboat ferries that you can ride there too. While we were there- they were making a movie. It was fun watching the stars and extras doing their thing. The name of the movie is “ABC’s Always & Forever” It stars Sara Rue and Barry Watson- we saw them.

11/9/10- We were now in Myrtle Beach, SC. After checking out the area we went over to Florence, SC to spend the night.

11/10/10- We arrived at my friend Barbara Holland’s in Concord, NC.

11/11/10- This was a rest day and boy did we need it !! LOL

11/12/10- The 3 of us went to Lowes Motor Speedway. We took the tour of the speedway- which includes A ride on the racetrack. Everyone had a great time. After a relaxing lunch- we took a drive Down to Charlotte, NC- so Mom could see the city.

Summer 2010

Summer 2010 This summer was very hot. Not a lot of things happening. Made a few trips to the beach and local pond to get pictures of sunsets. Spring 2010 trip to Maine

April 2-5, 2010 Trip to Maine Mom and I made a trip to Maine to visit with friends. We took Miss May with us. It was a beautiful stay. Very lively- lots of people in and out, kids riding motor bikes and quads. There is 5 dogs up there already and Miss May to the mix and oh boy!! LOL It was funny to see May interact with the pigs and horses (especially the big horses). The weather was great- sunny and warm! Check out the pictures from our visit. Graphics Creations

Hi Everyone,

In March 2010 I started an online graphics class. Here I am learning to make "tags".
Tags can be used for wallpapers on computers or cell phones, or be added to emails as stationary or signature cards. Tags can also be used to make business cards and many, many more things.

I use a Print Shop Program, photos, and different other elements and fonts to make my creations. I am really enjoying this new adventure..... I am hoping to one day use a lot of the pictures I have taken on my walk-about to make many wonderful things.

I have decided to post a copy of the different tags I have made. As I make new ones I will add to this album. So check back to this album to see my newest creations.

I hope you will enjoy looking at my tags, as much I enjoy making them.

WOW It's been a long time!!

Hi Everyone,

I can't believe that so much time has gone by since I last wrote anything in my Blog.

It has been an interesting year. I am going to give you an update...so come along for the ride!

The first of the year was marred by my mom having some health problems... but she is doing great now, which we are truly grateful for.

In Feb 2010 my cousin Mia (in FLA) contacted me, to help with a school project. Our cousin Joanne in Washington State has a young daughter who's name is Ally. Ally and her classmates were working on a "Flat Stanley" project.

{For those not familiar with Flat Stanley- it's a children's book about a little boy who gets flattened by a accident at school- but he finds out this is a good thing because his mom can mail him to visit family and friends across the country. He gets to see all kinds of great things}

Well, Ally and her classmates made "Flats" of themselves and mailed them out to family. "Flat Ally" first went to FLA for a visit with Mia. Mia then sent Ally up to us. We then took her around the whole New England area. The idea was to take as many pictures of "Flat Ally" - send emails & pictures, post cards back to the class so they could track the travels of their "Flats"

Below is a brief copy of "Flat Ally's" adventures while in New England. I have also posted some pictures for you to look at too, hope you enjoy them!

Here is my journal for my visit to Massachusetts:
Feb 8th- Arrived in Massachusetts

Feb 10th- We had a snow storm- we got 6” of snow.

Feb 13th - Aunt Flo , Donna & I went to Plymouth, MA

Feb 13th - Aunt Flo & Donna took me to Plymouth Harbor. This is where I saw The Mayflower II, and Plymouth Rock. It was fun to see where the Pilgrims landed. We also went to Plimoth Plantation (Plimoth is how Plymouth was spelt way back in the 1600’s), but I was not able to visit the Plimouth Village, because it was closed for the season. I did get my picture taken at the entrance, and I was able to peek over one fence and see some of the old houses inside. Hopefully one day I can come back and check out the village close up.

Feb 13th - Aunt Flo , Donna, David & I went to New Port & Providence, RI

Feb 13th - Once we had lunch, we (Aunt Flo, Donna, David) all then went to Rhode Island. We first went to Newport, RI. This area is near the ocean. We went to an area called the “Cliffs” or “Mansion Walk”. This is a long paved walkway that goes along the top of the cliffs that runs at the shore. There is a lot of very big houses they call Mansions here.
We then went to Providence, RI. This is the capital of Rhode Island. It is a small city but a very busy city. I was able to see a big mall (Providence Place) and the State House.

Feb 17th - Aunt Flo, Donna & I went to Hull, MA.
On Wednesday the 17th, Donna and Aunt Flo took me to Hull, MA. This at one time was a resort town for the wealthy families to summer in...but now has mostly year round residents. Though there are still some summer homes along the beach. At one time there was a huge amusement park here that had an old wooden roller coaster and many other cool rides, but now the only things left from those days is the antique carousal, putt putt golf, and a couple of arcades.
The waves were pretty big that day. But it was very windy and chilly! There is one unique landmark in the town. It’s the Revolutionary Fort- Ft. Revere.
It is an 8-acre historic site situated on a small peninsula located in Hull, Massachusetts. It is located on Telegraph Hill in Hull Village.
Fort Revere was called Fort Independence and later named in honor of Paul Revere. It was used to protect Boston Harbor dating from the American Revolutionary through World War II.

Feb 17th - Aunt Flo , Donna & I went to Quincy, MA
We traveled up to Quincy, MA, after leaving Hull. Here I saw where John Adams and John Quincy Adams lived! We took many pictures.

Feb 21st - Janine , Donna & I went to Concord & Boston, MA
On Sunday the 21st, Donna and her friend Janine took me to Concord and Boston, MA.
First we went to Concord, MA. Massachusetts has so much history about the Revolutionary War and everything else down to this day! I saw the oldest Inn in Concord and we had brunch there. Concord is where Paul Revere did his midnight ride to warn about the British coming. Many famous writers lived here too like Lousia May Alcott
( Little Women), Henry David Thoreau , and Nathaniel Hathorne.
After we did some picture taking we went back towards Boston. Boston is the Capital of Massachusetts. It is a very old city with lots and lots of history, like the Tea Party of Boston Harbor, part of the underground railroad from the Civil War. They have The Freedom Trail that is a walking tour that stops at all the Revolutionary War era historical sites, and many other wonderful things to see. We went to the Commons and Public Gardens. I got to see the "Make Way for Ducklings" ducks! While I was there, I met another flat Stanley person from Long Island, NY.
We walked for about 10 miles that day- we were very tired at the end of the day!

Feb 22nd - Aunt Flo , Donna & I went to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont
Late Sunday night Donna and Aunt Flo decided that on Monday we were going up to northern New England, because a week of storms was going to arrive starting Tuesday. They know I have to go home soon, so they decided to spend the day visiting Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
On Monday (2/22/10) we (Donna, Aunt Flo and MayMay - Donna's dog) left at 8 AM and headed to Maine. We stopped in Portland, Maine. This is a seaport city, not as big as most of the cities I have seen. It is an older city with many wonderful places to shop and eat. After taking a few pictures we head for New Hampshire. We were near the are where Mount Washington is located. We could see the mountain and took a picture of it. It's a very big mountain (over 6,000 feet). It has a unique very pointed peak- making it easy to recognize from a distance. I got my picture taken near a tram. Trams are small box like containers that run on cables up the sides of mountains- to make it easier to get up the mountains. They use these a lot in Ski Resort areas. We then headed over to Vermont. We got to White River Junction just before sunset. I saw the Connecticut River and an old train the historical society are trying to save. It was getting dark now, so we heading back to Taunton...it had been a long day. We were gone for 13 1/2 hrs and drove 520 miles!

Feb 23rd - New England got a big snow and rain storm. All the places we visited the day before- now had 10- 20” of snow!!

Mar 1st - Went back to Plymouth, MA to visit Jenney Grist Mill (1636).
On March 1st, Aunt Flo, Donna and I were heading back to Plymouth, MA to see a grist mill. On the way there we stopped and saw a Herring run. This is man-made dams and lifts built to help the Herring coming back from the ocean to get to local ponds, so they can lay eggs each Spring.
After visiting the Herring run, I was able to go to the oldest grist mill in the USA. The Jenney Grist Mill has been there since 1636. A grist mill is where they ground grain into flour for baking. It still works to this day- but was closed for the season.
Since I have been in New England, I have seen many great things- most unfortunately were closed for the winter....maybe some day I can return and revisit all these wonderful places. On the way home we stopped so I could see what a cranberry bog looked like. This is where they grow the cranberries for cranberry sauce and cranberry juice. It is a big business here in Massachusetts. The big company here for cranberries is Ocean Spray.

Mar 1st -David teaches me about Boston Sports Teams
When I got home from seeing the grist mill. David explained to me about all the sports teams in Massachusetts. There is for baseball: The Boston Red Sox; for football it's: The New England Patriots; for hockey its: The Boston Bruins; for basketball it's: The Celtics; and for soccer it's: The New England Revolution.

Mar 5th - Aunt Flo, Donna & I traveled to Mystic Seaport, CT
Today Aunt Flo, Donna and I went to Mystic Seaport, CT. This is a famous whaling village that still does active repairs and restoration on old wooden sailing ships. Most of the village was shut down for the Winter season, but I was able to see the lumber yard, the light house, and a few tall ships. There is also an art gallery there, with many beautiful paintings and some scrimshaw (that is cravings/drawings on whales tooth)

Mar 6th- Donna is taking me to the Post Office today, to mail me back home. I am excited about coming home but will miss everyone. I had a real nice time in New England. I hope to come back soon.

First Winter Storm on 12/19- 12/20/09

Hi Everyone,

Well it happened....We got our first big storm on Saturday 12/19 - Sunday 12/20. It started at about 9pm on Saturday and at the height of the storm we were getting about 3"/hr. The storm continued until 4pm on Sunday!! When all was said and done we had 2 feet of snow with drifts that went up to about 3 1/2 feet high!

My brother Wade stopped by to do some snow removal, then was called out on a tow- then David came home and finished up the remaining clean up.

May went out and immediately buried her face in the snow and ran around checking things out! LOL She just loves the snow!!

I have a feeling this will be a snowy winter for everyone.

Upper Falls Region - Scarecrows

Hi there,

On Monday- October 12th Babs and I were getting ready to head home from Niagara Falls, NY.

I found out that in the Upper Falls Region the local towns were having a Scarecrow Festival. Through out the towns there was going to be Scarecrows that were made by local families and businesses. It sounded like fun so Babs and I decided to check it out.

We reached the area and started our Scarecrow hunt!! LOL

We were able to find quite a few- some were really good!!

The first town we went to was Lewiston, NY. A very quaint town with shop lined streets and the sidewalks were brick paved.
One of the shops that Babs "just had to stop in" was-" The Little Yellow Chocolate House". This store had many sweet treats and gift ideas. The owner (Jonathan Boas) was very friendly and helpful in our search for scarecrows....Babs couldn't resist getting a piece of Peanut Butter Fudge, before we continued on our way! LOL

While we were there I saw something I had never seen before....a black squirrel. He was jet black and so cute!! I have seen grey ones, brown ones, and even a white one once- but this was my first black furry encounter!

Our next stop was in Youngstown, NY. There were only a couple of scarecrows here...but while there, we also found they cute decorated fire hydrants..so we took a few pictures of them too.

Our last town to visit was Sanborn...once we had finished seeking out the scarecrows it was time to head back home.

The food was tasty and the wait staff was great. It was a very relaxing atmosphere- with Irish music playing the in the back ground.

After we finished we were on the road again!! We made good time getting back home and had no problems.

New York- Niagara Falls

Howdy,

On October 10th, my friend Babs and I headed to Niagara Falls, NY for the weekend. It was a long drive up with the rain, but relaxing...mostly beautiful farm land.

We had stopped at a rest area on the way up....and there was a tourist booth there. After looking at may brochures and talking with the consultant there we signed up for a tour with: Niagara Majestic Tours

We chose the American Tour- which includes: Niagara, Reservation State Park, Goat Island, 3-Sister Island, Prospect Point,Terrapin Point, Luna Island, Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, NYS Observation Tower, Whirlpool Rapids, Robert Moses Power Plant, Upper Niagara River & Rapids.

Once we arrived at the hotel we took it easy and had some dinner.

On Sunday morning we were picked up at the hotel by the tour company. It was a full and exciting day. This was my 2nd visit to the Falls. I had been there when I was 12 y/o. My Grandmother took my brother and me up to visit family. So it was great to see the area and how much it had changed over the years. Babs on the other hand had never been here before...It was great watching her enjoy the wonder of the Falls !!!

Once we finished the tour -we were exhausted and opted to grab some Chinese food and bring it back to the hotel... The next morning we were going to visit the Upper Falls Region and head home.

Topsfield Fair- Topsfield, MA

Hello Everyone,

It has been awhile since I last wrote in here…hope everyone is doing well.
I have been busy helping Mom out….she had surgery in September on her shoulder. She is doing much better but still has a long ways to go!!

On October 4th, my friend Janine and I went up to the Topsfield Fair together. This was the first time out for me in quite a while- it felt good. My son David and his new girlfriend Dee were going to be up at the same fair that day.

I got up early and headed to Abington to pick up Janine….we wanted to go very early to beat the traffic- it gets real bad up there at fair time- in the past we have sat in traffic for 2 hrs trying to get into the fair.

It is one of the regions longest running agricultural fairs….and I love it!!
We got there about 9 AM- it had rain really bad the day before and was still cloudy…so not many people were out and about yet….

I was a wonderful day. We got to see horse/team pulls, petted & fed some animals, got to see some really awesome flowers and vegetables arrangements!

Update for everyone.

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to touch base with you. I am doing pretty good. Finally the SUV seems to be fixed after spending close to $6000! (since May).
My dog May is also doing better- she had been very sick for a few months.....
But still I won't be going out on the road yet.... Mom found out last Friday that she has to have surgery on her shoulder tomorrow. She has a 4-6 month recovery ahead of her- so I am staying here to help her. If all goes well and no other problems come up I will go back out in the Spring.
2009 was a wash out as far as traveling goes- but that is ok...I have been blessed with the traveling I have been able to do so far!
I will try to get a couple of weekend trips in this winter...so check back every now and then to see where I disappeared to!! LOL
This summer has gone by fast... it started out as a rainy dismal summer, but ended quite nice.
I was able to get some pictures (on my cell phone ) of a beautiful rainbow in early August, and also got some nice sunset pictures. I have posted them for you to enjoy too!

Day in the Sun and Sand on Revere Beach- 7/18/09

Hi Everyone,
Last night while watching the news I found out that there was a Sand Sculpting contest at the Revere Beach in Revere, MA. (located just north of Boston)
So today I decided to take a ride and check it out- mom came along for the ride.
It was a very warm, humid day. There were many people at this beautiful beach. If was a bit foggy over the water but otherwise a perfect beach day.
There was swimming, sunning, kite flying and the sand sculptures.
This annual contest has quite the following- many people came this week to see the works of art. There were vendors, music, food, balloon guys...and of course tons of sand!! I was able to get a lot of great pictures- I hope you enjoy them.

Spring time....

Hi Everyone,

Spring has finally sprung!!! The trees and flowers are in bloom....baby critters are everywhere!

At Mom's there is a bunch of wildlife to watch and enjoy....from the birds, to the squirrels & bunnies.

We are puppy sitting for David & Jane while they move back to MA from TN....our guest is Miss Hannah...she is a Caron Terrier. She and my Miss May for the most part get along pretty good- Miss Hannah has some health issues so sometimes she doesn't want Miss May around her but they are still bonding. The proof is in the pictures....Check out Miss May modeling the latest of eye wear for dogs, for Miss Hannah!!!! LOL

I am a bit antsy these days...yearning to get back on the road.....Still having repair issues with my SUV. The next thing is to get the brakes done on the 3rd of June. Hopefully that will be the end of the repairs...but not sure, I have a loud rattle in the front end, that they have to check out!

Saturday- It appears Summer is here LOL- what happened to Spring???

Hi Everyone,

Today was a beautiful Summer day- the only problem is that it's still Spring!! We reached 81 today here in Taunton...... Boston tied the record of 83, and Worcester beat their record of 83 by having temp of 85.....what happened to Spring??? LOL We just had 3 days of rain so now with the warm temps today and tomorrow....everything is going to be growing like crazy! Hopefully I can get out soon and get some pictures of the beautiful Spring Colors.
The kids in this area had Spring Break this past week.
On Friday I am having more work done on the SUV.... hopefully will have everything fixed and ready to travel by June...but we will have to wait and see.

Hi there,
I did it!!! I finally am caught up to date with my blog!!! I got behind when I ran into a problem with the old blog site. It took me several months to find the best site to use. I found The Blogger and am very happy with it.
But once I fell behind it was very overwhelming...I had to transfer 2yrs of blogs over to this site then catch up on all the ones I hadn't written yet!! I had been keeping notes about my travels so I wouldn't forget anything.....Then I had to go through the thousands of pictures I had taken and pick out a few for each blog entry.....but it's done now and hopefully I will never have to go through that again.

The past month has been challenging. First, May got very sick and I had to take her to the hospital... I am glad to report that she is now doing very well. She just had a check up on the 3rd and is in good health.
Then a little over a week ago I lost the transmission in the SUV- almost $1300 later it was fixed. The day after I got it back- I decided to go for a ride to RI to a dog friendly beach.... just as I got into RI- I heard a strange noise and the engine light came on. I pulled over immediately and called for a tow. The mechanic at the garage said it was a good thing I did- I had lost 2 belts and the water pump!! He said if I had continued to drive it - I would have lost the engine too....These latest repairs will be another $550 .... So needless to say a lot of money has gone out recently!
I am grateful for one thing- and that is I was suppose to have been back on the road by now (was scheduled to leave March 1st), but due to the weather conditions in the areas I was heading too (Northern states and Midwest) I had decided to postpone my departure. I really would have hated to have had all of this happen when I was out on the road.
It looks like I will be heading out the first of June now. By then things weather wise should be more stable. Since I tent most of the time- I really don't want to deal with snow, floods, and tornado's! LOL
I also was contacted recently by a cousin Betty (on my dad's side of the family) that I hadn't heard from in many years.... come to find out she is now living in the Ocala area of Florida....not far from where I spend most of my time when I am in FL. So we will be keeping in touch and plan to see each other the next time I am in the area.

Hi Everyone....

I have been back home 3 months now. May and I have been enjoying the winter...we both love the snow!
Today my friend Babs and I took off for South Deerfield, MA. We were heading to the Butterfly place.
I had visited another Butterfly Conservatory when I was in Key West, and was looking forward to seeing this one. Babs had never been to one before and was very excited to go.
We had a wonderful time. It is so great to see all the beautiful butterflies and flowers, birds and other critters you find when you come to visit the conservatory.
It is a very peaceful and relaxing place to visit. We took tons of pictures... hope you enjoy them!

1/2/09 Getting ready to head to West Coast

Hi,

David and I spent the morning with the girls today. Amy had to go to work. So we took the girls to Loggerhead Park, at Palm Beach - to see the turtles that have been rescued locally.
This was a great place to visit- there was so much info about turtles and their rescues. It was cool to see all the baby turtles that had been saved....two babies were brought in while we were there!

Then we stopped by Amy's work to say goodbye...(we were heading over to the West Coast of Fl to Tarpon Springs- then going home).
We took the girls out to lunch...after which we brought them home said our goodbyes and hooked the trailer back up - and headed to my cousin Mia's.
On the way there we had a small problem with the trailer... a tire/wheel fell off. It must not have gotten put back on tight enough when we were working on it. After some maneuvering of lug nuts from the SUV we were back on the way to Mia's.
We arrived about 8pm. After getting cleaned up we joined everyone at the party- there were about 30 people there. Everyone was having a great time! I went to bed early as we had to leave around 6am to make sure we got David home by Sunday night- (he had work Monday morning).

Hi There...
David and I finished packing up and started out to West Palm Beach....we were going to visit with our good friend Amy and her girls.
They did not know David as in FL or on his way to see them- it was going to be a huge surprise for them- as it had been about 2 yrs since they had last seen him!
We arrive about 1pm and I placed a call up to them and said I had arrived and needed help bringing my things in .... in the mean time David hid on the other side of the SUV.
(On the way down David and I made a bet on who would be more surprised Amy or the girls....)
Well they came down and after being greeted by May- they came over to SUV to help me...as we unloaded things- David popped up and said hello......well Amy is the one who was the most surprised- she went nuts....screaming and running around the SUV to give David a huge hug....followed closely by the girls!
It was a great reunion. Later that evening we went out for some dinner- then to bed for the night.

Hi there,
I took David over to Port Richey to meet our cousin Michael at his restaurant "Fatty 'N Mabel's". We ended up having a bite to eat and a couple of drinks. It was great seeing Mike again.
I told Mike we were going to take a ride down to Mia & Bob's for a visit. Mike then asked us to drop off a coffee urn to Mia for her party Friday night.
Next we arrived at Mia's. We had a great visit with Mia, Bob, and Shane (Sara had just left before we arrived). Before leaving we were invited to come back on Friday. Mia was having a party that was a combination of birthday and going away gathering. So agreed to come back on Friday.
We then headed back to Summerfield for the night- we were going to West Palm Beach in the morning.

Hi,

Today we took a trip to check out Old Town. This is a retro-speciality shopping area that has many shops, restaurants, amusement rides and classic car shows ( car shows on Friday's & Saturday's).
It was fun stepping back in time and looking through the different shops. I was able to find a license plate for my mom's car- that had the Patriots and Red Sox logo on it....
We also took a ride over to Melbourne- to see the ocean.

Took a ride to Clermont today with John and May to check out Lake Louisa. This is a large state park with many available activities including camping, swimming and fishing. The beach was great. Definitely a wonderful place to spend the day...enjoy the pictures.

The Crab Shack- Visit with family

Howdy!

I went to Hudson for a week to visit with my Aunt and Uncle. We had a great visit. My uncle helped me with the trailer...it really needed new wiring for the lights. He also did a few other extras to make traveling easier and safer.
We went to lunch at a restaurant not to far away. It was called the Crab Shack. It is located in Port Richey. The atmosphere here is great- in evening and on weekends they have music here also. The food was very good. I took a few pictures- Have fun looking at them!
A special thanks to my Aunt and Uncle for everything!! Love you both very much!

Hi Everyone,

While I was in Summerfield, FL - I found a solution for my over crowded SUV.
I found a used homemade trailer (truck bed made into a trailer with cap). I got it registered and brought it back to John's- where he and I worked on it to get it road ready. John did most of the work on it while I was visiting my family in Hudson- but he left some things for me to help with!! LOL
Then I brought it to Hudson for my uncle to check out- he had me leave it so he could work on the wiring and a couple of other things.
The end result was a trailer to haul all my belongings in- that frees up the inside of the SUV- which will give me more room for May (she will be joining me on my next trip out on walkabout) and give me a space to sleep if I need to stay in rest areas again. Thank you very much for all of your help John and Danny!- I couldn't have done it without your help!

11/14/08 Watching Endeavour Launch

Hi,
I am getting excited, we are going to drive over to John's favorite fishing spot to see the shuttle launch tonight. We went to Bissit Bay, this is about 30 miles north-east of the launch site. We did some fishing waiting for the 7:55pm launch.
There were a lot of people here and many boats out on the river waiting patiently to see the shuttle. There was a full moon and it was a clear night- perfect conditions. I was talking with some of the people there- they were saying it was really a sight to see the shuttle going up at night....I was so excited about being there.
Finally the time came - over to our right there was a huge yellow/orange glow coming from behind the tree line. then slowly that bright light rose up in the sky- it lit the dark evening sky to almost a daylight brightness.....then came the rumble.....a deep bone vibrating rumble as the shuttle passed up past us...everything shook and May and another dog on the pier got real nervous and started to whine. All of us on the pier let out a collective cry of whoa, as the rumbling over took us!! We stayed and watched until we could now longer see the shuttle.

11/10/08 Going to Texas for quick visit

Hi Everyone,
Two weeks later I was going to take a quick trip to TX to visit with Tommy and Leeann-Tommy was shipping back out to Iraq in December. They were both going back to Massachusetts for a visit in late November and I wouldn't be there- and I wanted to see them so decided to hike over for a few days. I made it as far as Tallahassee when I had another flat tire on the right front this time!!! This seemed so unreal to me to have 2 flats with in 2 weeks on 2 new tires. I called home while I was waiting for the tow truck. My mom said that there were reports on the news up there on valve stems failing on Trucks and SUV's. I called the place where I got the tires- they said to bring the tire back when I came home and they would look into it. So once again I was buying a new tire!! Not a happy camper.... It was now almost 8pm and I was out of money so I headed back to Summerfield- called Tommy and Leeann to give them the bad news that I wasn't going to be able to make it out for the visit. Today John and I went to a local winery to take a tour and participate in a wine tasting. It was very interesting seeing the whole process that it takes to make wine ready to ship to local vendors.
The wine tasting was fun- we ended up leaving with 3 bottles of wine and a bottle of champagne!

Yes it's true I am heading back to Florida...LOL My friend John flew up to Massachusetts- he had never been here before. I showed him around for a couple of days- on 10/21/08 - I took John to Plymouth- then on 10/22/08 we headed back to Florida. When we were just about to leave New York- I had a blowout on the left front tire. It was a scary experience. We were able to get over to the side of the highway with out any injuries. I called AAA and we got towed to a service station- once there we also became aware that the battery in SUV had died......so much fun!! I had just bought the 2 front tires in June and was not happy that I lost one already. We made it the rest of the way to FL without any problems.- Catch you later- Love Donna

Hi Everyone,

Tonight I went to my favorite fall event. I went to the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, MA. My son David went with me this year.
I love this fair!!! It has the old time feel to it. Tonight is special also because one of my favorite bands will be playing here tonight- Lonestar.
It was a great performance they put on!!! The Grandstands were placed for this free concert.... they band played for almost 2hrs....they played many of their hits and some of songs from their new album.
Everyone had a great time!!

Hi,
Woke up to it snowing lightly. It was still dark out but decided to get an early start. Then it started really snowing hard- blizzard like- I couldn't see a thing!!
I was driving on the Interstate going only 20 mph with my flashers on so I wouldn't get hit- I couldn't see the road so I was using the warning strip on side of highway to keep myself on the road (wake up bumps). I kept my right tires on the strip- I knew as long as I could feel the bumps I was still on the highway and not heading off the road.
By the time I made the next exit there was about 15 of us poking along- but amazingly there were idiots flying by us!!! Most of us got off the next exit and went to a truck stop to wait the storm out. The truck stop was packed. There was a lot of people with the same idea as me. We sat in the restaurant part and watched all the police, ambulances, and tow trucks going back and forth. More people came in to report cars and trucks off the road all over the place...I was not surprised with the way these crazy drivers were flying down the road.
About 2hrs later, the sun came out and things started to melt. I started back out again. I made a stop in Columbus to get my oil changed.
I had bad weather again when I got into West Virginia and had it all the way home...snow,snow,snow...what a long trip it was! I was glad to be back in Massachusetts.

2/28/08 On the Way Home- Kansas & Ohio

Hi,

I woke up about 4:30am on Thursday morning, in the rest area. It was mighty cold out!!! The sun was just rising. The snow storm that I had been driving through most of the previous day and night was now gone. Thank goodness the restrooms here are heated!! LOL I got cleaned up and was heading out- Thinking about heading to Oklahoma.

Before long I was in Kansas. Mostly farms open country here.....you go miles without seeing nothing but farms. I got a call from my son David. He was asking if I could head home. My mom taken a fall and was going to need surgery, and her car died and she needed to get to doctors appointments. So home bound I was headed.

I made it through Kansas and into Missouri. I kept seeing signs for Nostalgiaville, USA. It peaked my interest so I decided to get off the highway and check it out.
This place was great!!! They had everything and anything for memorabilia from the 50's era on.. very retro!! They have an online site- so either stop in the store or check out their website, you won't be sorry...after buying a few gifts, I was again on the road.

I stopped at the welcome center/rest area in Kingdom City, MO and found a surprise. There was a memorial there for firefighters. It was a really beautiful memorial to those who had given their lives to save others. After taking several pictures I went inside. I spoke with a wonderful elderly gentleman who was telling me about all the different things to see in the area. Before long I again was on the road.

As I was getting ready to leave Missouri, I drove through St. Louis ( The Gateway City) and saw the famous St. Louis Arch. I got a couple pictures of it from the highway as I drove past. I will have to come back and check it out more another time.

By the time it got dark, I was in Ohio and getting very tired. I stopped at a rest area for the night. It was starting to spit snow again.

2/27/08 Grand Canyon, AZ Four Corners

Hi There,
It was now 4:30 AM on Wednesday morning. I couldn’t sleep anymore so I decided to head out on the road again.
I was heading to the Grand Canyon today looking for a place to land for a couple of days.
I crossed over the Hoover Dam- it was about 5 AM and still very dark out. At the check point the Officer asked where I was heading and where I had come from. Because the windows in the back of my SUV are tinted- he also asked me to roll down the windows so he could look into the back….guess he wanted to make sure I wasn’t smuggling anything. They were doing construction of the Dam, and there really wasn’t any place to pull over with all of the equipment. So I will come back to this area again and check it out more. Hopefully they will have a lot of the big cranes and things gone by then.
It was beautiful to see the sunrise as I was driving thru the mountains.
I arrived in Williams, AZ about 10 AM. I was seeing icy patches on the road…this was not a good sign as I was looking for a place to camp…and where there is ice snow is usually close by!! LOL
I made it to the Grand Canyon National Park around 11:30 AM. I stopped at the rangers station. The rangers confirmed what I suspected and that is that they still had a lot of snow cover up there. They said if I wanted to I could camp there…I checked out the camp areas but there was 1-2 feet of snow on the ground. Too much for me to set up a tent in.
This was my second time to the Grand Canyon. I was here in 2001 with my son David. The park still takes my breath away. There is no way to describe what you see here to truly let others know the beauty here.
In 2001 when we got back home I was telling my family about the experience….my brother said to me “ what is the big deal- it’s just a hole in the ground!!” Well a few years later he had the opportunity to visit the “hole in the ground”, when he got back- he apologized- he finally understood why I went on and on about what I had seen.
Everyone should try to visit this park…..It will take your breath away and reaffirm you faith in GOD and the creation of our wonderful planet!!
I spent the day driving along the south ridge and stopping at several of the vista / lookout points. If you would like further info about this park please see: www.nps.gov/grca
After leaving the park I was heading to Four Corners. This is where 4 states meet, AZ, CO, NM, UT. There is a Monument here, plus trading post/flee market type stands…. There are Indian goods made by Navajo Nation and food.

After spending about an hour at Four Corners, I was again out on the road- looking for a place to spend the night. I was up high in the mountains in Rio Grande National Park, and it was starting to snow quite a bit. After several hours of driving I finally found a rest area in South Fork, CO - for the night. It was very cold- so I dug out some more blankets…hoping that tomorrow would bring an end to the snow.

Howdy Ya’ll,
It’s now Tuesday…I am finally heading out of the San Diego area for good. I have been very fortunate to spend quite a bit of time in this wonderful area in the past month. But it’s time to move on now!!
My destination is Death Valley National Park. In particular I was looking for Badwater, CA. This is the lowest point of the Continental US. It is 282 feet below sea level.
I made it out there in the late afternoon. The salt flats were very interesting to see. At Badwater there it a visitors spot where you can walk out onto the salt flats- and up on the cliff behind the boardwalk is a sign to show where sea level is.

I then headed out of the Death Valley Park. I saw a sign for “Area 51” It was dark now and I was looking for a place to land for the night. I drove thru Las Vegas, NV. The city was a sea of lights and people. I found a truck stop area about 10 mins outside of the city…near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I decided to catch some sleep here for the night.

Hi Everyone,
On Monday I headed to Mission Bay area of San Diego to meet up my friends Rick and Joyce from back home. They have been out in CA for about 2 weeks now and will be heading home soon.
It was great seeing them… it had been quite awhile.
We visited at the condo they were renting- then went out for lunch. After lunch we drove around the Mission Bay and La Jolla areas of San Diego.
One of the places we went to was the Solana Beach Coastal Trail. This was a very nice park. The visitors center was very informative and the walk/trails had views to die for!!
It was now getting late in the afternoon. So we headed back to the condo. I stayed a bit longer then headed back to the motel for the night.
On Tuesday I was heading back towards the east and I was planning to check out Death Valley, CA.

Hi there,

Its now Sunday morning. I am making my way back to San Diego. I came across a sign for Dana's Point. I remember my cousin Mia telling me about this place- so I decided to stop and check it out.
It is a beautiful cove area that has a Marine Center located there. After viewing the sea life in the Marine Center... I took the short walk to the ocean. It really is a beautiful view.

After leaving Dana's Point, I found a lookout area off I-5. Here you could see quite a ways up and down the coast. There was a compass built into the walk area- showing the directions of some major points nearby. I spent quite awhile here watching the wild life. There were birds and ground squirrels and other such creatures.... LOL

I then drove the rest of the way to San Diego- back to the same motel David and I stayed at!! The next day I would be visiting with Rick and Joyce for the day.

Hi Everyone,

On Friday 2/22/08 I head back north towards Tulare. I will be meeting up with some of my online friends on Saturday.

I arrived kinda late to find a camp site so I stayed in a rest area for the night. The next day I met up with Elaine and Therese. We had lunch at a local restaurant and I was telling them about my walkabout and the things I had seen recently in Visalia and Exeter. They told me they had art work on buildings there too. So after lunch we were off to find more murals for me to get pictures of.....
We had a blast this is a very charming agricultural area. I really enjoyed my visit here. When we were done running around it was time to say goodbye....but no one wanted to say goodbye! LOL
Elaine then offered for me to stay the night with them. Her husband was a Minister at a local church and they had a room in the building just off the church. There was Elaine and her husband Charles, and Therese and her husband Mike. The 5 of us had dinner together over at Therese and Mikes. We had a wonderful evening...eating, playing cards and chatting!!
I want to thank Elaine, Charles, Therese, and Mike for all the warm loving friendship they showed me. I really appreciated all they did for me during my short visit. They have asked me to come back for a visit.... I will stop back when I come back out to do the northern part of CA.

For now it was time to get some rest- Sunday morning I was heading back to San Diego area- friends from back home are there on vacation and want me to stop in for a visit!

2/11/08 Mt. Figueroa - Los Olivos, CA

Howdy.....

On Monday I was checking out the Santa Maria area.... then I moved more south into Los Olivos area. Through out this region there are many farms and vineyards, rolling hills and very green grassy hillsides.

I went to the rangers station for Mt. Figueroa. I decided that this was the area I was going to stay for a bit. I also purchased a National Parks Pass. This is a really good deal. For under $100 you get a pass (looks like a credit card). This gives you free entrance to all National Parks across the USA. It also gives you other discounts...(even in some Parks) free camping. Kinda wish I had gotten this much sooner- as I have visited many National Parks so far and would have saved several hundred dollars by now. But lesson learned....and will know to get them from now on. Once you get the pass it's good for 1 year. I intend to use this pass a lot and will renew it when this one expires!!!

Mt. Figueroa is a good size mountain. It has primitive camping only. No electric no running water. I set up and settled in. Then went back down the mountain to get supplies.

I was the only camper up on "My Mountain" for my 1st - 5 days. Because the area was very remote and no one else was up there- I decided to set up tent and put all of my belongings in the tent and to live/sleep in the SUV, for safety reasons. There are a lot of big wild animals up here (black bears and mountain lions)... I didn't want to take any chances.

The weekend came and so did a few other campers- about 6 other groups...but by Monday the mountain and I were alone again!!! LOL

I was up on the mountain 8 days before I saw any rangers!! Once they realized I was up there- they did drive by once a day to check on me. The weather during my stay was great - sunny and in the 60's the whole time. I made a couple of side trips down "My Mountain" to get supplies and to check out surrounding areas. One area I visited was Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley. This is a very quaint region. Known as the "Danish Capital of America" It looks like a Danish Village was plucked from Europe and set down in the USA. There are about 150 different speciality shops, vineyards, many B&B's...and many more things to see and do. It really is a place to come visit!!

Another area near by was the San Rafael Wilderness- in he Los Padres National Forest. This approximately 80,000 acre primitive wilderness area.

I had been up on "My Mountain" for 10 days when a Ranger came by to warn me about a bad storm coming in the next day. I told him I had been monitoring the weather...but thought it was going to be just rain. He agreed it would be just rain but the winds were going to be very strong- and he said up on Figueroa the winds can get really bad. He strongly suggested I not stay up on mountain during the storm- just in case. I thanked him and told him I'd move out the next day. The next morning was sunny and no sign of storm coming....but I started to pack up the SUV and just was I was putting the last of my things in the SUV - it started to rain lightly. By the time I was 1/2 way down the mountain it was pouring and the winds started to pick up. Once at the bottom of the mountain- it was a driving rain and the winds were unreal!!!! I was so glad I left when I did- I could just imagine how wild it would have been up on top of that mountain!

I went back to the motel in Santa Maria for the night and decided to head back to the Tulare area the next day to meet up with some friends.

2/10/08 Visalia, Exeter, Kings Canyon

Hello Everyone,
Morning came quickly!! I was up and ready to explore the area. There was a heavy fog/mist over the area.

I start out driving around the Visalia area. All of this area is known as the gateway to the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. This is area is loaded with many, many farms....most were orchids....It was a nice area. As I was making my way to Kings Canyon- when I discovered Exeter, CA. This quaint little town was great. There were many buildings with painted murals depicting the history of the area. It was very interesting walking around town - getting pictures of all of them.

Once I made it into the National Park I found a lot of snow- the snow was higher that my SUV!! I made it to the giant Sequoias. These giants are something to behold!!! You will see in a couple of pictures a person standing at the base of the tree. This person was about my height 5'7", so you can have an idea of how big these trees are!!! Its hard to really get the full sense of the size of these huge trees!!! There is one that is down and hollowed out- you can actually walk through the interior of this tree!! If you ever get to this area This National Park is a must see!!!!!!!

By evening I found myself in Santa Maria for the night. I stayed in a local motel...will look for a camp area in the morning.

Hi there,

I am leaving Lone Pine now....It was a great visit... I will stop back here again to further investigate this wonderful area.

I had a long drive ahead of me. I came across an area known as Red Rock Canyon. The rock formations are a beautiful shade of red!! After stretching my legs for a bit and taking in the scenery I was once again heading to Visalia.

By the time I reached the area it was getting late- I found a KOA Campground. Decided to call it a day and get a good nights sleep

In the morning I would check out the area better, and head up to Kings Canyon.

2/8/08 Lone Pine- Movie Road- Beverly & Jim Rogers Museum

Hey Everyone!!

Here is about my day in Lone Pine! I started by visiting the Beverly & Jim Rogers Museum.
This place is great!!! It is a museum of the history of film making in the Lone Pine area.
There have been hundreds of movies and commercials made here. Not all of the movies were Westerns either! That was a real surprise to me!

This museum was full of posters, costumes and many other artifacts from all the movies made here. There were saddles, outfits, guns, stage coach, autographs.....and so much more. They also had a small movie theater- where they show for free a 10 min movie about the filming in Lone Pine. The museum also had a wonderful gift shop with a lot of unique gifts.

After spending a couple of hours taking in all the sites here- I was ready to go out and see the actual place these movies were made. It is called Movie Road located in the Alabama Hills, at the base of Mount Whitney (the highest point in the lower 48 States).

It was so great to actually be where all those movies were made....to walk where so many famous people had walked before me....but more important to me was to see GOD's most wonderful beautiful creations... these mountains, and rock formations wowed me constantly!

2/7/08 Arriving at Lake Diaz

Hi There,

Made it to Lake Diaz- this is where I will camp for the next couple of days- while I check out the area. It is a beautiful campground nestled in between 2 mountain ranges....the view is spectacular!! There were 3 others here camping.... it is winter time here and not many people camp this time of year.... I can imagine that in the summer this place is packed!!!

I made 2 little friends there were a couple of squirrels that had a home in a nearby tree.... I can already tell they are going to be a great source of amusement for me!!! LOL They are very active and playful.

After I was done setting up - I ventured out to the visitors center for the area to discover everything there was to see out here. Well needless to say there is tons and tons of things to see here. Between the mountains and the desert and everything in between!!! I know won't get it all in but I will try my best!! Once leaving the visitor center I went to Lone Pine to check it out- I found a few interesting things there to check out further- but it was getting late now- so I decided to head back to camp site for the night. There isn't much in the line of street lights up here.....so when it gets dark- it's very dark!!

I enjoyed a very quiet and peaceful evening ....it was a bit chilly sitting out by the campfire- but once I got into my tent and under my blankets...I was nice and toasty!! OK I am off to get my first pictures of this area ready to post.... will be back soon- Love Donna

2/6/08 Wednesday- Palm Springs and Ridge Crest

Hi There,

I left TwentyNine Palms in the morning to seek out some Mountain Ram art work in the Palm Springs area.

I arrived in Palm Springs a short time later. I did a quick drive thru and realized that parking the SUV and walking around would be a better idea. As this area is very congested with a lot of foot traffic....you can get around by car but with all the shops so close to one another and all the visitors milling around- it was easier to park and check things out. I went to the small visitors center/library. I was not getting much info or real help...I asked a few people about the art work or if they knew where I could find out more information about the Rams...I basically got the cold shoulder from everyone that I spoke with. I did find out about an Art Museum in the area- so I made my way there trying to find out more about the art work. Well when I got there....I got the the cold shoulder there too......so I was not overly impressed with the Palm Springs area. I got the impression that people here are a bit to snobby for my liking. I guess the don't take to outsiders very much....the only visitors they seem to be interested in are the local visitors! If you were from out of the area- they couldn't be bothered with you....very disappointed!!!

As I was making my way out of the area I did find one of the Rams. As you can see in the picture above. I found it outside a local bank. Well I am now done with this area!! LOL

Now to make my way to Lone Pine. I drove all day and it was getting late and I was noticing signs for free range cattle and I started having flash backs to New Mexico....LOL.....so I decided to find a place to settle for the night. By this time I arrived in Ridge Crest, CA. This lovely little town is nestled up in the mountains.

I was looking forward to arriving in Lone Pine the next day. I have been a long time fan of Western movies and I found out this is the place to visit- the mecca of where Western movies were made! A special thanks to my friend Jullie and all of her help finding out about this area..... It started when I was in TX visiting with her. Another friend told me that John Wayne had made several movies in the area around San Angelo......well after some research- Jullie and I found out that most of the Western movies I grew up watching were made in Lone Pine, CA!!!! So here I was making my way to Lone Pine.....can't wait to check out the area!!!

Another beautiful sunny day...... I stopped in the office to ask about some loud booming sounds I heard during the night. The clerk gave a chuckle and said that is "Our Marines " playing war games. They were shooting off their big guns. I hadn't realized that there was a large Marine Base just down the road in the middle of this desert. LOL
I headed to the museum- "29 Palms Art Gallery" 1st. The Gallery can be found at:

I found Anne and told her about my travels and that I was looking for the giant painted tortoises. Much to my disappointment the project had taken place the previous year and all the pieces of art work had already been auctioned off. It was a project to help out the local Hospice Center. Anne did give me the name of the head of the Hospice, and I planned to go there for a visit- hoping they may still have one or two of the tortoise there. I spent about 1/2 hr looking around the museum at all the art work done by local artist. There were some truly beautiful pieces in the museum. I asked Anne about the art work painted on buildings around town, that I had noticed the day before. She told me about the "Oasis of Murals" a project that she and others had been working on. All of these paintings were a look into the heritage of the desert oasis area. The Morongo Basin Area. Anne gave me a visitor's guide of all the paintings in the area. I planned to visit all of them and get some pictures of them. She also told me about a project in Palm Springs of Mountain Rams ( I will check that out later). I thanked Anne for all of her help...and off I went.
I was now on my way to the Hospice Center hoping to see those giant tortoises.
I found the Center....but I was sad to hear that they had no tortoises left. They showed me some pictures of the ones that had been painted by local artist.....The artist had done a great job on them...sorry I don't have any pictures of them to share with you.

I now took my "Oasis of Murals" guide and went on the hunt for art work around TwentyNine Palms. The guide was very helpful. It not only had a picture of the murals with brief descriptions- it also had a map to show me where to find them all!! There were a total of 22 different murals....all were very interesting!! After going around town taking pictures I decided to get a bite to eat. When I finished I made my way to the Joshua Tree National Park. This National Park is part of the Mojave Desert. I spent the rest of the day exploring the Park....there is so much beauty in the desert!

2/4/08 Monday - Heading to 29 Palms

Hello Everyone,

Monday morning it was time to leave the motel that I had spent that 11 days at. I was now heading to 29 Palms a town out in the Mojave Desert. I was hoping to find a contact given to me by an art director in Ocala, FL.

She had told me about this other art center and their work with a project of giant painted tortoises.... much on the idea of the art work I have been finding through out the country.

I arrived in 29 Palms by mid afternoon. I found the art center but it was closed on Mondays. So I decided to find a place to set up camp for the night. I found a wonderful RV resort. It is called Twenty Nine Palms Resort. Located at: 4949 Desert Knoll Ave, TwentyNine Palms, CA.

The prices were great and there was so much they had to offer. There were places for RV's, tenting and a few cabins. They had a huge indoor pool, sauna,hot tub, golf,club house (where many other activities are held- like music, dancing,dinners), card/dart/pool room, laundry facilities, and many more amenities. I would highly recommend this resort if you are in the area and need a place to stay.

After getting settled I found a grocery store in town and got some supplies. While I was out I noticed a lot of the buildings around town had art work on them. So I started to take pictures of them.

Now the sun was getting ready to set so back to resort I headed. Had some dinner, went for a swim and then settled for the night.

It had been a great day... and I was looking forward to exploring the area more the next morning.

2/3/08 Super Bowl Sunday!!

Hi Everyone,

This is the last day of David's visit. He will be on a plane tonight- heading back home to Massachusetts.
We did a little shopping and grabbed some pizza and settled into the room to watch the Super Bowl together. Our Patriots were playing against the NY Giants. It was a great game.....but unfortunately The Patriots lost....(soooo sad) LOL
After the game was over I drove David to the airport so he could catch his flight home. It was a sad evening- I really didn't want him to go home....I guess I was feeling a bit home sick.
I went back to the motel and got things together. The next morning I was heading to 29 Palms. I was looking for some art work that my contact - Nancy in Ocala, FL had told me about. I was looking for Anne at the 29 Palms Art Gallery. I was hoping to find giant painted tortoises.

2/2/08 Saturday- Corando, Imperial Beach, Little Italy

Howdy,

Well it was now Saturday morning....the weather was beautiful as it had been all week.

David and I decided to take a ride over to Coronado Island. This is an island located in the Harbor. You get to it by crossing the Coronado Bridge. There are many homes, businesses and the entrance to the Naval Base, on this Island.....Also the famous Coronado Hotel.

We walked along the beach and enjoyed watching the dogs playing on the beach together (part of the beach is for dogs to romp- up near the Naval Base-end) There were also many, many, sail boats out on the water... It was a very relaxing morning.

After leaving the island we decided to go back to the Imperial Beach area. We found a quaint little coffee cafe'. We sat outside on their terrace area and drank our coffee and talked over all the many wonderful things we had seen so far. We also discussed the up coming evening activities.

We had found out earlier in the week that Saturday night in Little Italy there was going to be a "Passaporto di Carnevale"....sort of a Mardi Gras type night....there were going to be many activities, bands, singers, mimes, clowns and other such things.....

David and I had decided that we were going back to Little Italy to have dinner and enjoy the festivities. We were not disappointed. It was a fun night....we end up eating dinner back at Filippi's Pizza Grotto - and the food was superb!! After dinner we walked the whole length of Little Italy and took in all the sites and sounds......It was a wonderful way to bring our time together in San Diego to a close!

2/1/08 Friday- Day of Rest

Hi Again.....

This was our lazy day...... we have been going non stop for 5 days now...my back and whole body were shouting"STOP" !!! LOL

So David and I spent a very relaxing day doing just about nothing..... we slept in late, had a long breakfast......did some laundry.....watched TV..... and just rested up.

The week was going by so fast ....... David had a flight home Sunday after the Super Bowl..... It will be very sad to see him leave.

We decided to go out for dinner....we found a buffet style Chinese restaurant. the food wasn't bad. After dinner we went back to motel and just watched TV before going to bed.

1/31/08 Point Loma and Cabrillo National Monument

Back Again Everyone.....

After leaving the Wild Animal Park, David and I drove back to the coast. We were on our way to Point Loma and the Cabrillo National Monument.

At the beginning of Point Loma there is Coast Guard Light house and offices...one you leave the parking area there are signs explaining the sea life you are apt to see during your visit....then you proceed to walk down a series of walkways and paths to the edge of the cliffs. Standing out there on edge of cliffs is very awe inspiring. The birds fly by and you can almost touch them.... if you want - you can make your way down the cliffs to a small beach area- where you will find tide pools.

Once back up on the cliffs you can walk quite a ways along the edge of the cliffs enjoying the ocean view to the left and to the right a hill rising very high- and you can just barely see the top of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, on top of that hill.

After taking in the view for quite awhile we made our way back to SUV. We drove up to another look out point- the view was spectacular!!

We then drove up to the top of the hill where the Cabrillo National Monument and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse are located. From there you can see all of downtown San Diego and its outskirts, plus the whole harbor area. The views are breath taking!! There is a small museum up there explaining the history of the area. The Cabrillo Monument is located just outside the museum. The old lighthouse was a few hundred yards away and it was great to see this old lighthouse.... lighthouses hold a special place in my heart.

The Park closes at sundown so around 4:30 we started to make our way down to the city area... On the way back down the hill we noticed a National Cemetery. It is amazing to look in any direction and see a straight row of pristine white headstones. We made it to the highway and decided that we did not want to sit in rush hour traffic, so we got off at The Old Town exit and made our way back to Cafe Coyote to have dinner. The food once again was to die for!! We waited there well into the evening before heading back to the motel for the night.

It had been a very long day....but well worth all the aches and pains I was now feeling!!! LOL

Thursday 1/31/08 Wild Animal Park

Hey there......

Thursday morning David and I were up early once again. We had another full day ahead of us!!
Our first stop was the the Wild Animal Park located in the San Pasqual Valley of Rt 78. This park was truly wonderful!! There were so many animals to see and exhibits to learn from. There were rides, and special tours, food and shopping- a little bit of everything for everyone!!
This is a huge park...and needless to say by the time we got done I was very very grateful!LOL
There was one disappointment in the park that day. We had hoped to take a ride in the hot air balloon to get some great aerial views of the park but due to wind conditions that ride was not operating the day we were there.
We spent almost 5 hrs walking around and checking out all the animals. We did take one tram ride that took us out into the open areas where the animals roam.

Howdy Y'all,

On Wednesday morning David and I headed out to the San Diego Zoo. I was really looking forward to this adventure, because I was going to see my beloved Panda's!!!!

When we arrived, the zoo was just opening up for the day. There were a few school buses their with kids getting ready to check out the zoo.

Once inside we made our way around to all of the exhibits. We stopped to have a quick bite to eat at one of the many stands through out the zoo and we also went to the gift shop where I got a sterling silver panda for my ankle bracelet. We then went to one of the many shows offered at the zoo. To finish off our visit we took a tram ride around the zoo to get one more final look around. It was about 3pm when we left and heading back for downtown.

Once back in downtown San Diego we visited the Historic Gas Lamp Section. It was nice to see some of the old buildings and park areas. We were strolling along and getting hungry...LOL...we came across the Whiskey Girl and decided to have dinner there. The food and atmosphere were wonderful.

After dinner we decided we were not ready to head back to the motel yet...so we walked around town. The city is very busy and "colorful" at night! We came to a very interesting place and decided to check it out. It was called Dick's Last Resort. This is a very wild place !!!! LOL It would not have been a place I would normally frequent...but I am glad I checked it out.....They are a little too crazy in there for me....which is saying a lot....cause I am crazy myself!!!! LOL But I tend to be on the quiet side of crazy this place was hopping...in many ways!!!!! LOL After a couple of drinks and about a hour of people watching we were off again..... Our next stop was at a tavern called Maloney's. This was a quiet pub type bar. Mostly young college age kids in here...with a few of us older types!!!! LOL We stayed for a drink then decided that we would head back to the motel...we had another long day coming up......

Tuesday 1/29/08 Old Town, Harbor Tours,Trolley Tour, Seaport Village

Hey Everyone,

On Tuesday, 1/29/08- David and I ventured out once again to see more of San Diego! The weather was beautiful, sunny and high 60's. We got an early start as there was a lot to do today.... We started in Old Town.... where you get a taste for the early California life, The shops and restaurants in this area are great. The whole area is very interesting, lively and festive. We picked up the Sight Seeing Trolley here in Old Town and rode it as far as the Harbor. Once in the Harbor we took the Deluxe Full Bay Tour- (they offer 3 kinds of tours- (1) 1hr tour of North Bay, (2) 1hr tour of South Bay, or (3) 2hr Deluxe Full Bay Tour {North & South Bay})
Once we finished the relaxing 2 hr tour we took a ricksa ride past the Midway over to the Seaport Village. This wonderful area offers, many places to dine and shop and has a beautiful park that runs along the edge of the harbor. After spending awhile shopping and picture taking we caught backup with the Sight Seeing Trolley to finish that tour back to Old Town. We went through the famous Gas Lamp District.... David and I have plans to revisit this historic spot. As the trolley continued we came to a section of San Diego called Little Italy....well we just had to stop!!! We saw an Italian Restaurant that caught our eye and we hopped off the trolley once again. We decided to dine at Filippi's Pizza Grotto (1747 India St. San Diego).....This has to be one of the best places that I have been to in a very long time. The atmosphere and food were great!!! We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. We were told about a Carnevalle that was going to be taking place in Little Italy that week- called "Passaporto di Carnevale". We made note of the dates and planned to attend the event. There were going to be groups playing music, mimes, and much much more- not to mention all of that Italian food!! We were looking forward to revisiting Little Italy soon.
Now we hopped back on to the trolley heading back to Old Town. We decided to find a spot to sit and relax (not wishing to drive on the 12-laners with all the folks coming home from work!! LOL) We chose the Cafe Coyote to have a drink and appetizers. This place is fabulous. Everyone was warm and friendly, the food was great (they make their own tortillas right there). After spending a couple of hours there- Dave and I made our motel- to settle in for the night.

Hello Everyone,

After a good nights sleep David and I headed out to San Diego Harbor...to take in all of the museums on the waterfront...there are several!!

Our first stop was the Midway. This old aircraft carrier is now a floating museum, It is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Museum features a self audio tour- that tells the story of what is was like to serve on the carrier, there are also flight simulators, historical videos, gift shop, cafe' and much, much more. By doing the self audio tour you can go through the ship at your own pace and spend as much time at any area you wish. There is so much to see and learn from this tour. We spent about 2 hrs touring this carrier. Then we took a break and had lunch on the fantail of the ship in the cafe', and stopped by the gift store for a few gifts. Next we walked about 1 city block to the next set of museums called Historic Ships. As we were making our way there- we came across several sculptures that lined the harbor and benches that had tiles painted by area children...they were all so beautiful to look at. Hope you enjoy looking at them too!!!

We arrived at the Maritime Museum. There were 5 ships that we toured in this group... (1)the tall ship- Star of India, (2) 18 th Century Royal Navy Frigate -H.M.S Surprise, (3) 1898 Steam Ferry- Berkeley, (4) Soviet attack sub- B-39 and (5) 1904 Steam Yacht. First we viewed the Star of India. This was a beautiful old tall ship from 1863. It was wonderful to be able to see inside one of these ship- We have had the tall ships come into Boston on several occasions- but I have never been able to go see them live, and here I was walking the decks of this grand ship. The wood work and artifacts were very interesting. There were several paintings aboard this vessel too. The living quarters were very cramped-space was limited and was used to it's fullest. After we strolled around the Star- we went aboard the H.M.S. Surprise. This was a ship similar to the one used to film the Russel Crowe movie Master and Commander. The third vessel we came to was the Soviet attack sub- B-39. By this time I was all walked out- my back was letting me know so...LOL ... I stayed above and watched the goings on of the harbor and the planes landing and taking off from airport, while David went below and prowled around. He took some really great pictures as you will see. The 4th vessel we went on was the Berkeley. This was a great example of what the old steam ships looked like. There was a lot of brass and stain glass windows. There was a gift store on this one too. We came across a guided tour that was being done on aboard- teaching the kids all about life on the sea. The last ship we went on was the Meade. A beautiful yacht. Needless to say by the time we finished touring 6 ships we were done for the day!!! LOL

To finish off our day in downtown San Diego, we decide to eat that the Rock Bottom Cafe...it was one of the restaurants featured on the GO BOOK we had purchased. The food and ale was great. After a relaxing dinner we headed back to the motel to save all of our pictures and to plan out the next days plans.

Sunday 1/27/08 Aerospace Museum, Auto Museum, Lego Land

Hi Everyone,

Sunday was the 1st full day David & I spent touring San Diego. We started our day at the Aerospace Museum. In this museum- is the history for flight from it's very beginning down to this day. There are many wonderful exhibits detailing the history of flight. There is plenty of staff if you have any questions- but most exhibits have detailed write ups to read. Then David and I walked across the parking lot to the San Diego Auto Museum. This was a very interesting place also. It had many cars from early 1900's right on up through to some future type models. The history in here is great too- so much to see. There were also some vintage motor cycles in here too. We met up with a guide whose name was Mike Yeakle. He made cars for Dale Earnhardt Sr. There was one of Dale Sr.'s cars and motor bikes at the museum. We were off to Lego Land next- this was about 30 - 45 mins drive from downtown San Diego. Now even though this place is geared for kids...Kids of all ages will enjoy it. It's a park where everything is made out of Lego's. It is truly amazing to see the things that are made out of Lego's. In the middle of the Park is an area that depicts many places in the USA and in other parts of the world. I have been to many to the places in USA that they recreated. It is really great to see this part of the park. There are rides here for kids- and interactive places for the kids to build their own stuff (each building area is separated by age groups). Well it started to rain while we were at Lego Land and it was getting late in the day- so we decided to call it a day and head back to the motel. We needed to get some rest, as we had another full day ahead of us the next day! We finished out the day by having dinner at Achiote'.
This was a very nice Mexican Food Restaurant. The food and atmosphere were great and prices weren't bad.

Howdy there!
Well here we were (David & I)- on the west coast for the first time. My first instinct was to see the ocean!!
So after breakfast we were off- to check out San Diego, find some of the places we wanted to see, and to find the beaches!!
The motel, we were staying at was in southern San Diego. As a matter of fact we were only 3 miles from the Mexico border! So everything we wanted to see was north of us.
The 1st thing we found was Silver Strand Beach. It was a great beach very long… once parked I had my sandals off and was heading to the water! LOL- Everyone else on the beach was trying to avoid the water (probably to cool of a day for them - in the 60’s) but not for me. The water was wonderful. The waves here were pretty good size considering there was no storm in the area.
After playing in the surf for awhile and looking for shells…we were off again.
We drove thru downtown San Diego. Making notes of where certain things and streets were. So when we came back on Sunday to start using the “Go Card”, we’d know which way to go. We found a parking area (there are several) along the harbor. We stopped to get pictures of the city and of the art work that we saw there. We spent most of that day just driving around- taking pictures and getting a feel for the city. We then went a bit further outside the city and found Imperial Beach. This is a very nice beach/area. Lots to do and see- with a great fishing pier. We took a walk out to the end- watching the local surfers doing their thing, the wild life and did some people watching too. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable day!
We finished off the day by getting some pizza for dinner from Eastside Pizza. It was very yummy!

Hello,
I my first full day in California was spent resting! LOL The next day my son David was going to arrive for a 9 day visit with me.
On Friday 1/25/08, I picked David up at the airport it was great seeing him again. The airport was about 15 mins away from motel. David was pretty hungry by then with the time change and all - so we stopped next door to the motel and got a bite to eat. We spent the rest of the evening visiting, catching up and planning our adventures during his visit.
We had purchased “Go Cards” for the San Diego area. You can get these cards for most major cities and I would highly recommend them- even if the city is in your own state! They come in 1,2, 3, 5, and 7 day packages. We had purchased the 5 day pass. We saved a lot of money using (almost $300 for the two of us) this card. How it works is they give you a card (looks like a credit card) and a book of all the attractions, stores and restaurants that the card is good at. These books are great- really gives you an idea of all the things to do in the area. This card will either give you a free admission into an attraction or tour, a percentage off or free item in a restaurant, or a percentage off or free gift from a store. Like I stated earlier- David and I both got a card for 5 days which cost about $136.50 each. We ended up saving almost $300.00 with all the things we did…and we did a lot- but there was so much more we couldn’t get to!! So really folks…I would highly recommend these cards if you want to really get a feel for an area and save money! After a bit of discussing the plans David started to unpack his things. He had mentioned that he had a surprise for me. I thought it might be a Patriot’s shirt or hat (as we had been talking about them- they were in the play offs against that San Diego Chargers -that upcoming weekend) So David then handed me a box- it was a box for the camera he had bought his Nana a few months back- ( a real nice digital camera with zoom lens). So I opened it expecting to find my t-shirt… LOL…to my surprise there was a camera in it….“still being a bit slow on the draw”..I said “Oh, Nana let you bring her camera- that is great-we should get some good pictures!”…David started to laugh- he said no it’s yours! Well it took a couple of seconds for it to hit me then WOW!! He had gotten me the same camera…cause I was saying how much I really liked my moms- and someday would have to get one. What a blow me away surprise! Thank you again so very much David!!! The camera is great. It’s a FujiFilm- Fine PX S5700- camera. It has many wonderful features and takes great pictures! I said well since I have this great new camera- would you like to have my old faithful digit camera??? LOL- He said sure it would be a step up from the one he had!!! LOL
But the surprises were not over! He then took out a memory card and put it in the camera…and said watch this….. As I watched I saw my dog MayMay…. David had gone over to his uncles house and videoed taped (on the new camera) all the dogs- mine and my brothers all talking to me! It was so great to see them all especially May…. I had been missing her so much since I left her there. So as you can see it was a very good night for me. I had my son visiting, a new camera, and a video of my dog talking to me!! What more could a person ask for??? Nothing!
David and I decided to take the 1st full day of his visit relaxing and driving around the area to get a feel for things…..that will be in the next blog.

1/23/08 AZ to CA

Hi Everyone,
While spending the night in a rest area in AZ, I noticed some billboard signs that had “Points of Interest” for that area. I made notes of things I wanted to see and headed out early that next morning.
I started at 5am making my way to my 1st stop- Tombstone, AZ. I am a “western movie nut” and have seen many movies over the years about this town. I thought it would be neat to go take a look at the real thing! I arrived just before sunrise. I parked my SUV and waited for the sun to rise so I could see everything. When it finally did get light enough, I started to laugh, as I noticed I parked right out front of the “OK Corral” !! (LOL)
The streets were mostly empty- with the exception of some folks heading to work, and buses getting ready to pick kids up for school. I strolled around the town and took several pictures. I will have to re-visit this area again. I want to check it out more thoroughly. It was very interesting peeking into the different shops they have there….but as it was so early -nothing was open!
After getting my quick view of Tombstone, I was once again on the road. The next stop was at an Old Mission.
This Mission was part of the National Park Service. The Mission San Jose’ De Tumac’acori was very old and I was surprised to see how much of the ruins had survived till now!
There was a school field trip at the mission while I was there….so needless to say they was a lot of energy filled children all over the place! LOL
I spent about 1 hr there…then I was back on the road to the 3rd and final place I wanted to check out before leaving AZ.
The 3rd stop was at The Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Just outside the park entrance is a small artist village. There is many little art type businesses here. Things like pottery, quilts, sculptures and many, many more! Once inside the park, there was a whole lot to see and learn! It was more like a museum of that time period- you walked around through the different buildings and you would see artifacts from the time period -when the presidio was up and running. It was interesting to see all the items and to read about life back then. I spent about 1.5 hrs here- then got back on the road-I wanted to make California by night time.

When I hit California I came across a vast region of sand dunes- they were real pretty to look at. Then I hit the mountains again… by this time it started to storm and was getting dark fast. I kept looking for a place to stay for the night but nothing that I could afford was in this area, so I kept driving. I ended up in San Diego. I arrived about 7pm and started to try finding the hotel I had booked for when Dave arrived- I was a day early, but hoped they had a room available. Around 8pm I finally found it and I was very fortunate- they had my room vacant! So off to rest I went…it had been a very long day.

1/22/08 Making my way out of TX going to CA

Hi Everyone…..
On January 22nd, 2008 I left San Angelo. I was finally heading out of Texas. I needed to be in San Diego, CA by 1/25/08 ,as my son Dave was flying out to meet me and spend 9 days checking out the sights with me.
As I was making my way out of TX …I passed thru El Paso. While driving I heard an ad on a local radio station, for a store in El Paso that had sports memorabilia. They specifically advertised having New England Patriots things…I thought this was very interesting considering this is Cowboys territory…and Texans take their football very seriously….they don’t take kindly to outsiders!! LOL So I decided to try and find this store. I followed the directions that the radio gave- and I was able to find the store with no problem. The name of this store is “ Xicali Imports”. I was checking things out- there was quite a variety of things here…one being sports memorabilia. I was looking for a vinyl Patriots sticker (to put on my back window to accompany my Boston Red Sox sticker that Bab’s had given me). I was having a hard time locating the sticker that I wanted and the young man behind the counter asked if he could help me find something…. I told he what I was looking for….he started to get all excited and said I have them right here (near the register). Come to find out this young mans name was Mike, and he and his brother were huge fans of Boston teams. They had been to MA and had really enjoyed themselves. Mike even mentioned that they had hoped to someday move out to MA. So we were talking sports Patriots then about the Red Sox…I had mentioned that my son Dave had gone to game 7 of the American League Champion Series….well Mike got real excited then!! He said me too !!! He went on to tell how he and his brother were there at the same game….he even showed me pictures on his blackberry that he had taken at the game. I told him I was traveling and that I would mention him and his store on my web blog. When I got back out to the parking lot I noticed a jeep that I had parked next to and started laughing out loud….I didn’t need three guesses to figure out who it belonged to…..as you will see in the pictures it must have belonged to Mike and he didn’t exaggerate he definitely does like MA !!! I was great meeting you Mike….I wish you well. If you ever find yourself stop in and say hi to Mike and take a look at the many interesting items they have in stock. Now was I making my way into New Mexico and I started get anxious… The last time I was in this state I had my car totaled by cows!! 12/29/07 Arriving in San Angelo, TX

Hey Everyone……
Time for more updates!
On Dec 29th I arrived in San Angelo. I came here to visit with my friend Jullie. I took a couple of days to get rested then on Monday nite Jullie & I went out to her favorite karaoke bar. We had a great time.
The next few days I spent exploring San Angelo. I found it very similar to Killeen. A military town (Goodfellow AFB). There were a few things different here than in Killeen- one being there as a good sized University here, and the other there was an old section of town that dated back to the 1800’s when Fort Concho was “the military base”.
On Jan 12th, Jullie & I went to see a play at the Angelo Civic Theater. It was a musical called “I love you, You’re perfect, Now change!” The play was excellent…very funny. It took a look at relationships from being to end…from youth to the golden years.
Jullie and I also enjoyed dinner at Carino’s. They had delicious Italian food!
My next adventure was to Fort Concho, on January 15th. At the front desk was a very helpful young man whose name was Corey Robinson. Corey was very helpful and gave me a brief history of the Fort and made sure I had everything I needed to do my tour. I took the self tour, but they do have guided ones for those who choose them. It was very interesting seeing the fort…..not like I pictured forts in the west. There were a lot of artifacts to look at and read about. I found it especially comforting as I was walking from one building to the next. I got the sense of home while I was there…..It had to do with the structures themselves. They were made in the early 1800’s- The house I grew up in, was constructed in 1724- These building had the same creaky wooden floors and stairs. Also the door frames and thresholds looked the same….it sort of was like being back home in Hanover. We owned that house from 1962 - 1994, when Mom moved to Taunton.

Next on January 19th, I went to see a place called Buffalo Gap. When I got up to go here it was very early and there had been a deep freeze overnight. I was wishing for my ice scraper! (LOL) Within a few minutes of the defrosters being on I was on my way. I saw a beautiful sunrise as I head north. It didn’t quite take me as long I thought it would…and when I got there most of the things around there were not open. I went and grabbed a cup of coffee, and found a flea market opening up. This flea market is opened on the 3rd weekend of every month. There were not a lot of tables open as this was the 1st event of the new year and it was mighty chilly. But there was quite a bit of space for tables so during the spring and summer - I’m sure this quite a big event.
I went back to the Buffalo Gap Historic Village around 10am. They had just opened, so I was first customer for the day. This is a small village set up in approx. 1 acre site. It is a village set up to depict 50 years of Texas history in the area. It is divided into 3 areas the 1880’s, early 1900’s and 1925 era. This was a self guided tour- with the use of information wands. You punch in the number of the site you are looking at and there is a recorded description of what you are seeing. I was starting to end my time in Texas….It was time to get moving again.
I want to say thank you to Jullie for having me stay with her. I enjoyed my visit with her very much. I also enjoyed meeting a few of her friends…..a special thanks to Niki and her husband Harland for making me feel welcome.
It was now January 22nd and I was back on the road again…..My new destination was San Diego, CA. Needed to be there by the 25th as my son Dave was flying in to meet me there and spend 9 days visiting.

Tranferring of Blog Complete!!

Hi Everyone,
As most of you know I was having problems with my AOL blog account. I wasn't able to resolve them and started to look for a new home for my blogs. I found this blog site and I really liked it. I'm not able to put all my pictures on here like the old site, but they provide a program to post pictures for users. In all of my blogs I list a link for this site, so that you can view the pictures I have taken.
After I had found this site AOL announced that they were closing down their blog site- so this is for the best!!
I now plan to finish updating my blogs- I had been holding off until I found "New Home". Leaving Florida and Heading Back To Texas

Hi,

It was now December 26th and I was making my way back to Texas. I said so long to John....I enjoyed my stay very much- Thank you. I left about 10:00 a.m. and traveled until about 11 p.m. that night. I ran into a very bad t-storm earlier that evening in Mississippi. I stopped and had dinner, at that time, to avoid the bad driving conditions. Then when the rain let up I continued until I got to Louisiana. I stop at a rest area and took a nap. Around 3 a.m. I started back out on I-10. I made it to San Antonio by 9 a.m. I stayed at a local motel for the remainder of that day and night- getting some much needed rest.

The next morning I headed north on I-35 to Nolanville. This is located near Killeen. This is where Tommy was now staying. He had called me the day before when he heard I was back in Texas. (We didn't get to visit very long after his arrival back home from Iraq, and he asked if we could get together for a bit.) So..... instead of heading straight to San Angelo (my intended next stop) I was going north again!! LOL I arrived in Nolansville around 1p.m. I was introduced to Tommy's friends and then we were off to do some shopping and getting a bite to eat. My visit with Tommy was great. We really had a nice time....lots of laughing, and catching up. After a good nights sleep, I packed up the SUV, went out to lunch with Tommy, then headed west to my next stop San Angelo.

The drive to San Angelo was nice. I had beautiful weather and there wasn't much traffic on the route I took. The only problem I ran into is that I hit an area that had no phone service (for about 1 hour). This is only the 2nd time since I've started my travels that this has happened...so I very fortunate...I have a good cell phone provider!!

I arrived in San Angelo on December 29th about 5:30 p.m. I will be here for about 3 - 4 weeks visiting with my friend Jullie and checking out the area. So until next time- take care everyone and be safe!! - Love Donna

Horses, Cats & Dogs of Ocala

Hi Everyone......
On December 20th, I accompanied John to Ocala. He had an appointment that day so I decided to go exploring while he was busy.
I came to the center of town and saw a small garden / square there. I also spied several horse statues.....very similar to the other art statues I have encountered along the way on my walkabout. So I just "HAD TO" stop and investigate!!! LOL
I finally found a parking space, got out and started taking pictures of these horses. In the same area, there was a woman who had a hotdog stand. I found out this woman and her hotdog stand are a well known fixture in the area, and there have been several newspaper articles written about her in the local papers. I asked her if there were anymore horse statues in the area, so I could get their pictures too. She directed me to the visitors center across the street and the Marion Cultural Alliance- down on another street. I thanked her and was on my way to find more horses.
I first went to the visitors center....where I saw a statue of a sm colt. I took it's picture, but there was no literature there that I could see about the horses, and no one was in the office at the time I was there. The visitors center was in same building as Chamber of Commerce, and they had a receptionist. She was very nice and pointed out another horse with in that building, and told me I would be able to get the most information from the Cultural Center......so after taking some more pictures I was off to find the Cultural Center.
I found the center, and within a few minutes was talking to the director. Her name is Nancy Ledding. Nancy was very helpful (as was her staff). Nancy explained that the horses were part of an exhibit called “Horse Fever” She allowed me access to the two horses they had there....then explained where I could find the remaining ones that were still in the area. Most had been auctioned off and moved already. We got to talking and I explained about my travels and how I had come upon several different types of this charity art work. She told me about another project ( a current one) that the Center was working on... it was called “Barkitecture“. It is art statues of cats & dogs and scaled model dog houses that have been displayed through out the Ocala area...and they will be auction off on February 2nd, 2008. The proceeds will help the Cultural Center and the Humane Society of Marion County. Nancy told me I was in luck because the upcoming weekend all of the pieces would be at the old library on display for all to see!! Well needless to say I was very excited with this news, and started to make plans to be back in Ocala that weekend. She also told me about a project going on in California (a state that I'm traveling to very soon) that will have statues of giant tortoises. She even gave me a contact name to reach once I get out there. Nancy said that Anne would be able to tell me where I could find all the pieces...so I'm very excited about seeing these statues too!!!
On Saturday, John & I arrived at the old library. We were greeted by Roseanne and Elsie, then we began to walk around enjoying the very creative works of art on display. I took many pictures - as you'll see above- and then we stopped to talk with Roseanne & Elsie some more. Come to find out they were mother and daughter. Roseanne (the daughter) is very active on the committee that came up with the idea for this project....and it was a family thing...because Roseanne's husband even lent his talents in building one of the dog houses! I told them about my travels and how I had seen other works of art...and how much I have come to enjoy looking for them. After spending almost 2hrs there we decided it was time to leave. This was a very enjoyable experience. I encourage all to check in their local areas to see if any such projects are in the works or have been done in their areas. These beautiful works of art are so wonderful to look at and experience!

St. Augustine 12/18/07

Hi Everyone...

Back again.....

My next adventure was to St. Augustine, FL. John & I drove over to the east coast to check out this historic area.

We first visited the beach, then was heading toward the State Park. On the way to state park we spotted the St. Augustine Light. As most people know I love light houses, so of course we had to stop!! LOL

When you first enter this area- there is a gift shop that has a room with a lot of memorabilia. Then you can go up to the light house and actually go into the tower. Just inside the light house is a museum type setting of actually rooms & artifacts used when the light house was manned. Then we climbed up all 217 steps to the very top!! The we strolled (LOL- well I actually crept holding onto the wall of tower- I'm deathly afraid of heights LOL) around the top of the light house...this was such an awesome experience!!!! Not only did I get to go into the lighthouse (most you can only view from outside), but I actually made it to the very top and walked around the watch-walk!!! The view was beautiful.

Shane's Going Away Party

Hi Ya'll,

The next thing I did while in FLA was to attend the going away party for Shane, my cousin Mia's son. He was leaving that day for basic training- he had joined the Navy. It was great to see everyone. I surprised my mom, aunt & uncle as they did not know I was back in FLA...LOL

The Party was held at my cousin Michael's restaurant - Fatty N' Mabels... (Michael is Shane's uncle).

There were a few tears as Shane said his goodbyes....but party the came to a happy close. I love you all- it was great seeing you again!!-Donna

Crystal River, FL

Hi Everyone,

I made it to Florida safely. Rested up for a few days waiting for the shuttle launch- the launch ended up getting canceled until January.

I decided to find some things to do in the central and upper part of Florida. I was going to be staying with my friend John in Summerfield for about 2 1/2 weeks.

Our first trip was to the Crystal River area. We were looking for an area to see manatee's, but we weren't very successful finding them. LOL

But we did find quite a few other interesting things to see. Our 1st stop was a whoops stop....I thought I had been told that the power plant area was the place to see manatee's...so we headed that way. Well we got onto the road to the power plant and realized it wasn't what we wanted but by that time we were unable to turn around....so we ended up having to go thru security. LOL So now I'm not only on the radar in Mexico & Canada...but here in the States!! LOL After being released from the security station we headed out on our search again. We ended up at the Crystal River Archaeological State Park. This park was small and quaint. It had a lot of information and artifacts from early Native Americans that lived in the area.

After walking around for awhile...we moved on down the road. We ended up at the Crystal River Beach. This is a small, clean almost private type beach. There was a boardwalk and a jetty to enjoy. There were tons of birds resting on the beach...it was great to be able to get that close to them. We finished off the day with dinner at the Golden Corral.

It was a great day and very relaxing.

Killeen & Belton - Tommy's home coming

Hi Ya’ll,

I was getting ready to hit the road again…going back to Killeen. During the night a small camper pulled in next to me.. I took some pictures of it….it was so cute!!!! Now I would like to have one of those or one of the T@B’s that are on the market now- it would make camping in bad weather much easier!

I am going to miss this peaceful place, but it is time to move on……

I left around 8:30 a.m. and was making my way to San Antonio to have lunch with my friend Bud. I ran into rush hour traffic with it’s usual accident tie ups!! So I didn’t actually get into SA until almost 2 p.m. I had a nice visit and lunch with Bud…then off to Killeen I was heading.

I arrived in Killeen late that night- around 9 p.m. and got a room at a local hotel.

The next morning 11/30/07 I was headed to Belton, TX. This is where the camp ground I was going to stay at was located. Belton is just outside of Killeen - about 15 miles.

I stayed at the Belton RV Park- I 35 exit 292 (Loop 121) This was a nice park. Family run place- with Good Sam’s (an RV service plan) Out front they sold and serviced RV’s…in the back was the campground. There was plenty of campsites, playground area, pool, function hall/room, general store, reading room (that had a TV, paperback book swap, and a treadmill), rec room (that had TV, coffee, pool table), very clean bathhouse, and laundry room.

It was located near several shopping areas. They don’t have a web address that I know of, but if you want to contact them their phone number is (254) 939-1961.

I stayed here from 11/30/07 to 12/5/07.

I drove back and forth from here to Killeen.

In Killeen…My friend Babs and her youngest son Tim arrived at the Killeen airport around 6:30 p.m. on the 30th. We were all gathering to welcome home Tommy- Babs oldest son. He’s a Staff Sergeant in the 1st CAV unit at Fort Hood. Who had been in Iraq for the past 15 months.

Leeann (Tommy’s wife) and her parents - Cindi & Dwight had already started prepping for his arrival with cooking and getting supplies to make welcome home signs. That night (Friday) we learned Tommy’s arrival on the 2nd had been pushed back until 1:30 a.m. on the 6th….. Not many happy faces with that news.

That night we sat around chatting and catching up with news.

The next few days were busy with getting things ready for Tommy coming home, some shopping, eating, and watching football (WTG PATRIOTS!!!!).

The time of Tommy’s arrival changed again for 11:30 p.m. on the 5th. We got a call from Tommy- he was in Maine and getting on a plane heading for TX. There was a lot of anxiety and anticipation of his arrival. Finally the hour arrived…we went over to the base and waited for the service group to arrive. All 115 servicemen/woman looked relieved and very happy to be home…and there were many tears from their family & friends too.

By the time be got back to the house it was almost 1:30 a.m. We sat around talking, hugging, and laughing.

I had packed up my campsite earlier that day and was ready to move on…so about 3:00 a.m. I hit the road….. I was heading back to Florida to see my friend John and to watch the shuttle launch.

It was great to see everyone in Killeen again…and it was nice to finally meet Dwight (I had met Cindi on my previous visit to TX) I had a really nice time with some very special people!!! Thank you everyone…I Love You All !!!

Galveston Island Explored 11/25/07 - 11/29/07

Hey Everyone,

This next entry is about my stay on Galveston Island, TX. The Galveston Island State Park is a very nice camping area- close to the Gulf. Each camp site had a table & lean to that gave a measure of protection from the sun. It is divided into 3 sections- each area has it’s own bath house. Though most of the people there were in RV’s, there were some of us hardy campers- tenting it!! LOL

This camp area is very quiet and peaceful…. with the ocean just a few feet away. There is plenty of wildlife to watch… including some feral cats who live here. They were fun watching- especially when they were on the hunt. They would sit on top of the fence post scanning the tall grasses for their prey…. But they had a fear of people, so you couldn’t get to close to them.

The sunrises and sunsets here are beautiful !!!!

I spent 4 days here. I also went from one end of Galveston Island to the other. I’d say it’s about 40 miles long. Most of the middle section is tourist friendly, with water parks, hotels, restaurants, bars, stores ….etc. On one end was a channel where the big ships would line up waiting to get into the harbor….the other end had a bridge that lead to the next town over.

There is plenty to do here… no matter what it is you like to do (walks on beach, shopping, boating, horseback riding, scooters, biking).

I also took a ferry ride from Galveston Island to Bolivar Peninsula. This ferry is free and runs very 15- 20 mins. The ride it’s self took about 15 mins. You can see much of Galveston Harbor, birds, boats/ships, and even dolphins on this ride. I took plenty of pictures, I hope you enjoy them.

11/24/07 - 11/25/07 Killeen, San Antonio, Galveston

Hi everybody,

It was Saturday morning and I was on my way again. I said my goodbyes to everyone...they were all staying until Monday before making their way back to Florida. I was now heading towards Killeen, TX.

I arrived around 3 p.m. in Killeen. Stopped and visited with LeeAnn for a bit. We went out for some supper and got caught up on up coming events. Her husband Tommy was going to be arriving home from Iraq soon. LeeAnn's parents (Cindi & Dwight), Tommy's mom (my good friend Babs) and his younger brother Tim were all going to be here in Killeen to welcome him home....oh and me too !! LOL But that wasn't going to be for a few more days so after resting for a bit....I continued on the road. I ended up in San Antonio for the night. I decided that I was going to Galveston- I had missed seeing this area the last time I was in Texas. After a good nights sleep I was on my way to Galveston.

It was a cloudy morning. I ran into some Monday morning traffic- but not too bad until I got near Houston...an oil tanker had tipped over and cause quite the mess in traffic. I was able to get some good sunrise pictures while I was waiting!! LOL

As I made my way out to Galveston Island, and it started raining.... it wasn't to heavy so it didn't affect the driving very much. I arrive on Galveston Island around 2 p.m. I found my way to the state park there. I registered for 4 nights and found my way to my camp sight. This state park is right on the shore. (not as close camping as on Assa Island, but closer than onSt. George's Island) It is a very nice park. Just a short walk to the ocean- about 100 - 150 yards. There were a couple of other tenters here, but it was mostly RV's. I waited a bit after arriving- as the rain seemed to be letting up and I don't like to set up in the rain, if I don't have to!!!! LOL

Well the rain did let up and I was able to get everything set up...before the rains came back.

11/19/07 - 11/21/07 Heading to Texas

Hi,

It was Monday morning (8:30 a.m.) and I was heading back out again. I was now heading back to Texas, to meet up with my Mom,and my Aunt Judy & Uncle Danny. It was a cool and sunny day when I left MA, and by the time I got into NY it had started to rain....then by the time I made it to PA it was snowing. It was the 1st snow for the area- according to the radio...it was my 1st snow of the season!! It was very pretty...and driving wasn't too bad, even though a couple of people I passed had some problems ! LOL

I stopped in a rest area, in VA for a couple of hours rest around midnight. I rested until 4 a.m. and decided to get back on the road. It was terrible driving conditions at this point. It was extremely foggy..the radio said 12' visibility- I think it was much less!! LOL- It was so bad that most people also had on their emergency flashers to make themselves more visible. Around 11 a.m. the sun finally broke thru and things were looking much better. I made my way into TN and decided to rest up for a bit. I finally stopped about 40 miles east of Memphis, and got a room for the night. It was now 2:30 p.m. and I was very tried from the two days of driving.

The next morning I was up and on the road again....and it was pouring out!!! The t.v. weatherman said severe t-storms and tornados were going to be in the area. I had planned to visit in Memphis but the weather was bad and I wanted to get out of the area in case the tornados came thru. (This was the 3rd time I've tried to see Memphis since I started my walkabout- I'm beginning to think I never gonna get there....LOL) The rain was so heavy that while traveling on the interstate we were only going 30 mph- it was very stressful driving in this heavy winds & rain. But I made it thru TN without incident. I was now in Arkansas and the conditions were no better..... After several hours of fighting this storm- it started to ease up. The sun tried to break through....it managed a little bit, but it did remain overcast and drizzling. I arrived in Marshall, TX around 3 p.m.

I stayed at a campground called The Country Pines RV Park. This is where my family was already registered. My uncle has a nice RV with plenty of room so I didn't need to set up my tent while here. I did have to make sure I got up early though- cause my bed was also was the kitchen table !! LOL It was a nice park- clean and well managed. It is located at: 5935 US 59 N, Marshall, TX (exit 617 off I-20)

I stayed here for 4 days. In that time we went out to eat and visited with my cousin Dawn and two of her children. It was a nice relaxing time, with many laughs and good conversations!!

Visit to West Palm Beach 11/10-11/12

Hi again....

I was on the road again....leaving my uncles place in Hudson, FL and heading to see friends in West Palm Beach....about a 5 hr drive to east coast!

I arrived late Saturday afternoon. It was good to see Amy, Nelson & the girls, and my MayMay..too!! I hadn't seen them since I left MA in June. Amy and the girls (and MayMay) moved down to FL in August, to start their new life with Nelson. (Amy & Nelson were married in February of this year.)

It was great to catch up with all the news...and just spending time together. Monday, Amy & the girls and I went to Sweet Tomato for some lunch....We didn't want our visit to end...but I had to be moving on.

I did have an unexpected change in plans though...It was determined that at this time, it was hard for Amy to keep MayMay for me....until they got their own home (they rent an apartment)...so I decided to take MayMay with me.....now this will change things!! LOL

I said my good byes and MayMay & I were on the road.....to Hudson.

I called my son Dave to let him know I had the dog with me....he said Oh Boy!! LOL- But I told him she was traveling well (MayMay loves to ride) and we'd figure things out as we went along. About and 1/2 hr later my brother calls and asked what I was doing...I said driving...LOL- he said with who??? LOL I said if you're asking then you already know!!! LOL

He pointed out that having MayMay with me would limit where I could go- and would prevent me from visiting some of the folks I had planned on seeing in Texas. He strongly suggested I bring her back home to stay with him (and his 3 dogs & 3 cats) until I got back in June. So now I was going to be heading back North AGAIN!!!! lol I saw a beautiful sunset as I was driving- and was able to get a couple of shots for the journal.

I arrived back in Hudson, Monday night...Tuesday I started back North. I stopped that night at my friend John A. (in Summerfield, FL) for a quick visit. Wednesday morning I was heading back home. Just after I had crossed into GA...I noticed several Nascar car transports heading South on I-95. Before dark fall I had seen a total of 23 Nascar transports pass by me. My aunt said they were heading to Homestead for the last race of the season. MayMay & I shared some strawberry Twizzlers during the trip, as you can see in the pictures...LOL I arrived back in Massachusetts late Thursday night.

Friday night, Dave & I brought MayMay over to Wade's house- we all had supper together. Saturday & Sunday, I spent the days getting some much needed rest. Sunday- I also went to get another oil change...the guy at Jiffy Lube kind of looked at me funny...you see just 15 days prior I had been there to get an oil change before taking mom to FL!!! Here just 15 days later I had over 3,000 miles on my SUV!!!! I laughed and said - just don't ask!!! LOL

On 11/19 (Monday) I was on the road again heading to Texas as I had plans to meet up with family on the 21st!!!

Fatty 'n Mabels

Hi everyone.....

Before I headed to West Palm Beach.... Danny, Judy, Mom and I went out to dinner. We decided to go visit my cousin Michael's new place. In March he followed his dreams and opened his own restaurant. He called it - Fatty 'N Mabel's (in memory of his parents).

The food was great and prices are reasonable. Everyone there seemed to enjoy working here, and it showed in their service to customers. The restaurant is full of atmosphere....and has great potential. On the weekends they have live bands, and have an area to hold functions. Michael said he had just gotten the ok to add some piers to the outside. He is hoping this will open up his place to the boating visitors, in the area. Not bad to dock at your favorite restaurant!! LOL

I wish you the very best Michael......always shoot for your dreams!!!

Hi everyone....

It's been awhile since I have updated the blog...so here we go.....

10/05/07- Went to Oktoberfest in Pineville, NC- had a wonderful time....lots of music, eating, drinking, and dancing!!

10/12/07 - Left NC and head home to MA. Will go to pick up mom and take her to Uncle Danny's in FLA. Stopped in Westminster, MD and spent the night with my friend Deb. Our friend Barb stopped by and we surprised her- as she didn't know I was coming to town.

10/13/07- arrived back home.......did a little visiting and got a well needed oil change for the SUV.

10/20/07 - Mom and I took a trip up to Palmyra, ME to see family friends. We got a lot of "visiting" in while we were there. It was very special for me, as I hadn't seen many of these friends for almost 20 yrs!!! We stayed over night at a local motel. The next morning we had breakfast with Diane & Kendall, and one of their sons Deriek. While we were eating Deriek mentioned that he was upset because he had tickets for game 7 of the American League Series for Boston Red Sox vs Cleveland Indians, and his brother backed out of going with him, late the previous night. I suggested he come back with us and we'd get him to Boston to see the game. He didn't want to go alone...I said, "if you wouldn't mind I'm sure my son Dave would love to go!" Well Deriek was very excited about this!!! LOL- so when we got back out into the parking lot, I called Dave and asked him what he was doing, and would he like to go to the game tonight? LOL-he wouldn't believe me.....so I put Deriek on the phone and let him explain the situation!!! SO OFF WE WENT- back to MA with another passenger in tow!! LOL. Dave & Deriek went to the game and they had a great time -as you can tell from picture above!! (Deriek in Blue- Red Sox shirt. Dave in Red- Red Sox sweatshirt), and of course the Red Sox's won!! Early the next morning (Monday) Mom & I drove Deriek into Boston, so he could catch the train back home. ***** Just a side note for those who may not know.....The Red Sox's went on to win the World Series against the Colorado Rockies!!!! WTG RED SOX!!!!!

11/03/07- Mom & I headed out for our trip to FLA. We left about 12 a.m. Saturday morning. We arrived in Mt. Jackson, VA around 1:30p.m.- we stopped here for the night.

11/04/07- back on the road early-stopped to do a tour of an exotic animal farm before we continued on. It was called: "Virginia Safari Park" located at 229 Safari Ln., Natural Bridge, VA. www.virginiasafaripark.com It was a lot of fun to see all the different animals. Mom seemed to really enjoy it too. It was a 3 mile drive thru park- where you fed the animals grain purchased from the park. We also came across a restaurant called the "Pink Cadillac"...we didn't stop in but pictures of this pink building with a pink Caddy parked out front!!! It was off the same exit as the Safari Park.

Ran into a detour in PA (due to a bad accident), but things moved right along. We finally landed in Crossville, TN at our friends the Worricks around 4:30 p.m.- we were both very tired and messed upwith the time change!! LOL We got doubled whammied LOL- Not only was it (fall back) DLS but we were now also in Central time!! So we gained two hours-It was weird.

11/05/07 We are now back on the road- We went thru the mountains again on our way to GA. We saw a street sign that had an unusual name- "Suck Creek Rd."- can you imagine writing that for an address!! LOL We stopped for the night in Macon, GA. We ate at a Mexican Restaurant called "El Azteca" located at 169 tom Hill Sr. Blvd. Macon, GA The food was very good and service was great- prices were reasonable. http://www.elaztecacantina.com/

11/06/07 We were back on the road early and making the last leg of our trip to Hudson, FL. We arrived in Hudson around 3:30 p.m. It was good to land for the day- It had been a very long trip.

I rested up for 3 days- as I was heading over to West Palm Beach to spend a couple of days with the Perez/Wombolt family, and see my dog MayMay.

Lowes Motor Speedway & TiJuana Flats

Hi Everyone.....

I know it's been awhile, but I'm back!! LOL The past couple of months have been very busy for me here in Charlotte, so I haven't had much time for sight seeing. But I am back to my road ways again!!!

On Thursday the 26th...I went up to Lowes Motor Speedway to finally check it out. I've been seeing this monster track from the highway for the last 4 yrs. I finally went in to check it out! They have a tour that runs daily for $5.00. It's a 40 min tour and IS A MUST if you are in the area!! We had a tour guide who's name was Ron. He took us to a van and started around the outside of the track. He was full of interesting facts about this terrific arena. As we made our way around the outside you could view all the open areas that are filled to capacity during race weeks, with RV's. Ron told us that the track holds approx. 173,000 fans and about 30,000 can be on the infield. He also said that during race week the Speedway swells to a quarter of a million people making it one of the largest cities in NC during that week. Now I know he speaks the truth...cause I've been in area during race week and the hub-bub around here is totally amazing!!!! RV's, vendors, and people for as far as the eye can see- all around Rt 29 in Concord.

After going around the outside we drove into the track area itself. We saw the bays where cars are kept and serviced, the hospital, and P.D. station located there. We even got to visit winners circle!!! The Richard Petty driving school was there that day. There were about 12 race cars at the track taking participants around the track. It was very cool listening to the sounds of the cars roaring by......These were the actual race cars. I got a few pics of them before we had to move on. We were then taken in the van, onto the track itself so we could feel 1st hand what it was like to be out there....we could only get up to 90 mph...much slower than the 200+ mph the actual cars go...but it was still very thrilling. A good time was had by all. I was also able to get pictures of the cement blocks of fame that lead up to the entrance of Speedway. Each of these blocks had the hand & foot prints of retired drivers, plus their signatures. I also saw a Plymouth Roadrunner in parking lot. I took its picture cause it reminded me of the Charger, I use to own (minus the fin of coarse LOL).

After the tour I decided to grab a bite to eat at a local Mexican Restaurant. It is called the TiJuana Flats. It is located at 3130 Driwood Court, Charlotte, NC. The food and service was great. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is fun!! You can tell the people like working there....so if you get the chance- check them out!

Whoops slight mishap with SUV....

Hi everyone...

Just a quick update for you...I did have a small mishap on Monday morning (7/23), in the SUV, while driving my friend to work. We had just gotten off highway and was traveling on a back road..when a 18 wheeler about 1 1/2 to 2 car lengths in front of us, shot a (baseball size) rock up at us. It hit the hood of the SUV, then hit 3 more hits before smashing the windshield twice. We were safely able to pull over immediately- the truck not knowing anything happened- kept going. My friend Barbara & I were covered in glass and dirt (dirt from rock). I got a sm cut on my L-index finger and something in my right eye...Barbara was fine- thank GOD! I'm also grateful we were not closer or going faster as I think things would have been much worse. I'm also grateful that the rock didn't bounce into SUV through the open sun roof and knock one of us in the head!
I dropped Barbara of at work then I went about taking care of matters...
A company called the Glass Doctor came out and replaced the windshield...and got most of the glass out of SUV. (I think it will be awhile before I can get it all-it went every where - LOL) Then I went to local E.R. to have my eye checked. I'm glad to report it doesn't look like there is any glass in it or scratches to the eye. They put a special dye in it and used an ultraviolet light and didn't see anything worrisome. They flushed the eye and gave me antibiotic drops that I have to use for the next 5 days.
If the eye is still bothering me in 3 days - I have to see an eye doctor.

We are planning a "girls trip" to Atlanta right now...going down to see the aquarium down there..I hear it is huge...and has an underwater walkway...I'll be sure to take pictures and fill you in on all the details.

An update...

Hi everyone....

Just a brief note to let you know I'm in North Carolina. I've been here a couple of weeks visiting friends. Earlier this week drove down to South Carolina to visit with some other friends. It's been hot here much like the rest of the country...with some wild t-storms thrown in !! LOL

The pictures above are of a sunset I saw on my way back from S.C. last night- it was so beautiful!!

I will be continuing on..but not for at least 2 more weeks.....so keep checking back for more updates.

Barren River Lake-State Park- 6/22/07 (Friday)

Hey Everyone…..

Well trying to cool off from this hot, hot day. I took a ride over to see the horses they have here at Barren River Lake State Park, for riding. They were looking as hot as me!! LOL One came over to me and was my buddy for awhile. He let me pet him and I gave him some sweet clover from my side of the fence.

Next I drove down to the lake itself. There was a lot of activity of putting in and taking out of boats. This area is greatly used by local families. Fishing is a big thing down here in Kentucky. I stayed and watched the sunset over the lake. I took a few shots to give you and idea of what I was seeing. I reflected on where I was now in my life, and where I had been. Today at 3:15 p.m. 27 years ago I had David. A definite turning point in my life. David is truly a blessing, in my life. I love him very much and am very proud of the man he has become. It’s been a wonderful 27 years together…looking forward to the many more years to come.

Well, folks I’ll be hitting the road again Sunday. I’m thinking of going to NC for a quick visit and check on my friend Big Ma….then off to TN to puppy sit for friends around the 15th of July. So until next time- Take care - With Love-Donna

Kentucky Down Under- 6/22/07

Hi Everyone…

It’s another hot day in Kentucky. Today (Friday- June 22nd) I headed out to visit a nearby park called “Kentucky Down Under”. They advertise animals and the atmosphere from Australia. It was a small, quaint park. It had both domestic and wildlife from Down Under. There was a reptile house, dingo, birds, barn animals, and outback animals. I got to feed some birds, and petted a few kangaroos!! It was interesting learning about and getting to touch these beautiful animals. I would say it takes a total of 3hrs to do the whole park. They also have a cave tour…no where near as big, as the one in Texas, or the other caves here in Kentucky (Mammoth Caves); but it was fun and a way to get a cool break from the summer sun.

Lincoln's Childhood Homes

Howdy!

On Tuesday June 19th I was up early and back on the road. I was traveling south west to the Lower part of Kentucky. This area is rich with history, as this is the area Abraham Lincoln was born in.

My first stop was in Hodgenville. This is where Lincoln was born. They have a State Park now where the original homestead was. This Park’s Information Center has many memorabilia and a film on Lincoln’s early years. The property also has a monument on it (which the one in DC was modeled after) which houses the Lincoln’s Cabin.

I then head to Lincoln’s 2nd childhood home in Knob Creek. This 228 acre farm is also now a State Park. They have a period cabin on the property (which belonged to former neighbors of the Lincoln’s- The Gallaghers). There were a few other places with more information about Lincoln, such as the Lincoln Museum….. but it was getting late and I needed to find a place to camp.

I finally ended up in Lucas, KY. Here is where the Barren River Lake State Park is located. I have a great spot here, and like all Kentucky state parks there is a lot offered to guest. Here there is swimming (lake & pool), golf, horseback riding, and boating. I’ll be here until Sunday morning……

Kentucky Horse Park - 6/17/07 - 6/19/07

Hi Everyone….

Hope this note is finding you all doing well. On June 17th -19th I visited Lexington, KY. To be more specific I stayed at the Kentucky Horse Park. Where the 2010 World Equestrian Games will be held! Now let me tell you, if you are any kind of a horse lover (as I am) then this is a place to visit.

It is 1,224 acres of horse land. There are approx 260 campsites located here (with electric & water) and many more “primitive campsites” are available. The park has many perks- including a swimming pool. They have so many year round activities such as:

American Saddlebred Museum

International Museum of the Horse

Kentucky Horse Park Gift Shop

Film “Thou Shalt Fly Without Wings”

Meet the Draft Horses

There is always something going on here at the park, and for one small price you get to see all of it!! ($15.00 park admission- excludes horseback riding & pony rides)

I really enjoyed my time here and would recommend this as a stop to make, if you find yourself in the Lexington area!

And you’ll never guess what else I found here!!!!! Remember the Cows, Whales, Clowns, Carousel Horses, and the Gas Pumps….that I have been finding across country…well the International Horse Museum has on exhibit here from June 2 - September 9 the “Trail of Painted Ponies“!! These life size horses are painted with different artist expressions of early America. I had found one in the Carls Bad Cave Information Center (New Mexico) …and was looking forward to finding more of them through out the west. They have 4 of them here at the Kentucky Horse Park. They also had several smaller versions of other horses to be found around the country. I was very lucky to find so many in one area!! I’m looking forward to finding more of these Painted Horses in my travels….plus what ever other Charity Art Work there is out there! If you know of any other Charity Art Work out there…please drop me a line and let me know. I’d be very interested in seeing more!

Arriving in Kentucky- Natural Bridge State Resort Park- Slade, KY

Hey There.....

On Thursday night (June 14th) I arrived in KY. I arrived to late to get a camp site so I stayed at a rest area (on I-64) for the night. It was a very hot all day...this brought in heat lightening that night. It was cool to watch thru my sun roof! I was able to have the sun roof open (without bugs getting in) cause David had made me a screen before I left home. It worked great! Thank you David (XOXOX)!!

I was up early Friday morning (4:30 a.m.) So after getting changed and straightening out the SUV, I was off. I saw the most beautiful sunrise while driving down Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway. (Pictures #1-5)

I now entered the Daniel Boone National Forest. This forest is very big and has several state parks within it. I was on my way to one of those state parks- "The Natural Bridge State Park". I was there by 6:30 a.m. LOL ....I was the only one there!! I started up a mountain path looking for the Natural Bridge, which is a landmark in this area. There are several paths you can take up to this bridge. I took the original path. This path is .75 miles up the side of the mountain!! (and I mean STRAIGHT UP!!!!) Just as I got to the Bridge- the sun was coming up over the tops of the trees. It was so peaceful up there with the birds singing....... (Pictures #6-26 ) Then I made my way back down-and it much easier going down!! I did run across 2 young men, then a couple on my way back. I was back to the SUV by 8:30 a.m., and then was off to find another state park.

I continued on Combs Parkway to Route 15 then to Route 119. Off Route 119, (on Route 90) there wasthe other park I was searching for, "Cumberland Falls State Park". In this park there is a waterfall famous for it's moonbows. What are moonbows? During the full moon a moonbow appears at the falls. I wasn't going to be here for next full moon, but I did get the rainbow that appears every sunny day!! The walk here was much easier to do! There are a few observation spots from where you can view the falls. So I took pictures from a couple of them. It is a nice park- that has a lot to offer it's visitors. (Pictures #27-41)

Now I started heading north trying to decide where to stay for the night. I was making my way back to I-75 through Corbin, KY.; when I saw a historic place that made me smile. It was the "Harland Sanders Cafe & Museum". For those who don't know who that is....well he founded KFC!! I once worked for KFC as a part-time job. I remember reading about the beginnings of KFC during my orientation....and here it was - the original restaurant!! So I stopped and took some pictures and got a bit to eat. This cafe is in the National Register of Historic Places. Inside they have the original kitchen set up, the Colonel's office, and the prototype for the 1st modern motel room. Then on the other side of the cafe, there were many displays of KFC memorabilia and a couple statues of the Colonel, and of course the restaurant itself. They also have a miniature model of the original site in a display case.(Pictures #42-61)

Now I was getting tired....so I found a motel in Richmond, KY for a couple of nights. I will be heading out again on Sunday morning, after resting my back for a bit. I'll be heading to Lexington, KY to see the "Kentucky Horse Park". I'll get back to you and update you on my visit there, in a few days.

Leaving West Virginia

Hi Ya'll.....

On June 13th I was preparing to leave West Virginia...on my way to Kentucky. I was traveling west on I-64 when I made my last stop in Huntington, W.V..

Here is located a Harley- Davidson dealership, called Charlie's Harley-Davidson (formerly Benjy's H-D) What makes this dealership unique is that is sells more than bikes. It has store with all kinds of H-D memorabilia (hats,mugs,clothes,boots,games,jewelry etc.) and it also has a parts store, where you can get anything and everything you could ever want or need for a bike. So why did I find it so interesting???? Well there is another feature that this dealership has...it is a museum of H-D bikes!

This museum takes you through the history of H-D, from 1901 to present day! It really was interesting to see the humble beginnings of H-D to what it is today. I learned a lot about H-D while here.

If you are in this area and a bike enthusiast then it would be a cool stop to make.

Blackwater Falls Sate Park & Seneca Rock- WV

Hello Everyone….
It’s Wednesday evening and I’m sitting at my camp with the fire blazing and the birds calling….
Last night we had a whooper of a t-storm come rolling through the mountains.
This morning I awoke to a beautiful sunny day. The wildlife around here is very abundant, and a joy to watch.
After getting ready I headed east on Rt33 to find The Blackwater Falls. They are located in the town of Davis. This and my other planned destination today, Seneca Rocks are part of The Monongaheia National Forest. Both state parks (Blackwater Falls & Seneca) offer a variety of activities, including camping, hiking etc.
Once I got to Blackwater Falls, I had a short walk down 214 steps to see the falls. There were 2 observation decks on the way down to the bottom. I stopped and took pictures at each level. The waters were running great due to the rain we had the night before. I spoke to one woman there who said she’d been there the day before and the waters were hardly coming down!! So thank you for the rain….because the waters were flowing!!!

Next I continued down Rt 219 (formerly Rt33) until I got to Rt 55. I followed that to Seneca Rocks. These rocks are famous in this area and a lot of daring people do climb them but….…not me!!! LOL
It was beginning to look like rain so I headed back to camp. I stopped at Walmart at bottom of mountain to jump online and answer some emails (as there is no service up on mountain). :0(
Then I went back to camp, started my fire and had some dinner.
I’m glad I brought some DVD’s with me for something to do later when it gets dark! LOL
Tomorrow I leave here and start heading more west toward Ohio- or maybe Kentucky- we’ll see where the road leads……

Arrived in West Virginia- Appalachian Glass & Gifts

Hello Everyone!

It’s a another beautiful day in Panda’s World!! LOL

The sun is out and it’s in the high 80’s. I left Fairmont, WV around 11:30 a.m. Started down Interstate 79. I hopped off a couple of times to find things of interest, but wasn’t having much luck. Cause when you are going 70 mph, it’s hard to see much of anything let alone all the small signs along the roadway!! So I jumped off the Interstate and headed back down Rt 119. I’m so glad I did. Not long after getting onto Rt 119 I came across a sign for a glass house. I love watching glass items being made!! Every year I go to the Topsfield Fair and watch the guy there do his thing!! It is truly amazing! This place is called the Appalachian Glass & Gifts, located in Weston, WV. Wow, what a place- cool stuff and awesome people! Inside there is a guy named Chip. He hand makes all the glass items you find inside- right there in the store. You can watch him work and he explains what he is doing as he goes along. There is also a gentleman doing woodworking there and a woman hand painting items. All crafts are sold right there. They also have a visitors center and items from other local merchants - like wine from the local winery! After I had browsed around a bit and picked up a couple of things, I asked Chip if he would mind me taking some pictures of him working. He gave me the go ahead, but we had to wait for a bit, so I sat and chatted with them for a while. Then Chip went back to creating beautiful pieces of glassware. I was then off to a campground that they recommended- The Broken Wheel. I’ll spend the next couple of days here, and check out the places suggested to me by Chip and his crew!

Just before I got to camp ground I saw a sign! This one was for Stonewall Jackson Dam. So I went in to check it out- there were a few people fishing along the ponds & rivers banks. I then went on to find the campground.

The camp ground is great! At the general store/office they have hummingbird feeders, on the front porch. There are so many hummingbirds !!! I have never seen so many at one time. They buzz all around you! And I do mean buzz!!! LOL They sound like giant bumble bee as they go by! I also have see a few domesticated bunnies hopping around, and many others birds like cardinals and finches. I will enjoy this spot for sure. Check out their info at:

Landed in PA

Hi Everyone….
Just a quick note to let you know how my visit to Pennsylvania went. I left Maryland Sunday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. and was moving northwest towards PA. I stopped at the visitors center just over state line. The gentleman there was very helpful. He suggested getting off Interstate 81 and try Route 30, then Route 31. “These were more scenic highways“ he said, “with many point of interest along the way“. So off I went to get onto Route 30 to start my PA adventures. My 1st order of business was to get a place to stay for the night as it was getting late. The tourist guy suggested the “Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campgrounds” in Chambersburg. This campground is in Franklin County, located between the Back & Dennis Creeks. It’s actually a 150 acre working farm. The have about 100 acres dedicated to crops and they also have many livestock’s. They set aside an area for 120 camp sites. It is a very peaceful place. Many large shade trees and the winding creeks that cross through the camp. Wasn’t long before I had the camp all set up and was relaxing for the evening.
Monday (6/11/07) Was up early due to the loud birds and all the farm equipment rolling by!! LOL. I got up at 7a.m. and had my shower, and camp site packed up by 8 a.m.!! Then I was off to see the area between there and West Virginia, my next destination. As I went west on Route 30, I noticed a old gas pump painted up, so I turned around to check it out. It turned out to be a replica of the old gas pumps from the 30’s-40’s. It was part of the “The Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor” There was a brochure stand there so I grabbed a map to check it out. This was one of many exhibits along this 200 mile roadside museum. This Route 30 used to be the way to get from NYC to San Francisco back in the day! There are signs all along the way that let you know when special historical places are coming up. The brochure listed all of them so you could visit each and everyone of them. These gas pumps were along the same idea as in my previous entries about the Cows from Boston, MA; Whales from Cape Cod, MA; Clowns from Sarasota,FL; Horses from Meridan, MS; Electric Guitars from Austin, TX. They commission local artist to paint these replica gas pumps. I saw 3 before exiting onto Route 31. If you want more info about the Lincoln Highway check out: http://www.lhhc.org/. I stopped at two of the exhibits. The 1st was at Johnnie’s Diner & Motel. I had a great breakfast there! That was in McConnellsburg, PA; then I stopped at the Travelers Rest just between Everett & Breezewood, PA. I spoke to Karen. She filled me in about the highway and the place there that she & her husband run. She showed me some old pictures and clippings of the Motel from the 40’s- Her husbands family had owed the business since 1947! Now I made my way on Route 31 to Bedford County. This area is known for it’s old covered wooden bridges. There is a self driving tour that takes you from one to another all thru the county. There are 13 of them in all !! I was able to get to 4 of them, before moving on. If you’d like more info on the bridges check out:

My next stop was further down Rt31 in Laurel Highlands. This county has so much to offer. There are just so many things to see and do. I chose to see the Frank Lloyd Wright’s homes. Mr. Wright is a very famous architect from the 30’s and 40’s. He has designed homes all across the US. There are 3 in this area! The 1st one I went to see “Fallingwater” is located in Mill Run, PA. Mr. Wright designed his homes to incorporate the feel of the surroundings. It is truly amazing to see these creations! Unfortunately on Mondays there is only the self walking tour.. The house is closed for the day. (I also found out the other two houses were also closed that day- and they didn’t have walking tours at them) So I took the walking tour- about ¼ mile. At the beginning is a visitors center which also has a restaurant.(they were closed on Monday too) I walked along these pathways through the forest. You could hear the river's waters running down over the rocks. The pathways had hundreds of rhododendron bushes on both sides. The birds and small wildlife were all over the place- and fun to watch. After a short walk, there it was!! - the Fallingwaters house. This has to be, one of the most peaceful places I have ever seen! I would love to be able to live here!! The water fall actually runs under part of the house, as you’ll see in the pictures. I would recommend this as a stop if you ever find yourself in the area! (but remember- closed on Mondays!! LOL)

It was now getting late so I decided to head toward West Virginia. I took Rt 119 off 31 and head south. I found the Ohiopyle State Park along the way! There was a river with falls which ran along the road. So I stopped and took a short walk, and of course took pictures too!! LOL
I stopped in Fairmont, WV for the night- it was about 6 p.m. It was a long day but so much fun….Hope you enjoy the pictures from the day.

On Walkabout again

Hey Everyone....

I'm back on the road again!!! Left Massachusetts earlier Friday (6/8/07) - 12:30 a.m. and headed to Maryland.

I arrived in Maryland by 8 a.m.- made great time...

Spent 3 days visiting with family and friends. Had a great time- Thank you Kelly, Brian, Robin, Graham, Barb, and Deb.

I left Sunday morning and was heading to PA. So check back for those pictures and reports...... here we go again!!!

Wildlife in Mom's Yard

Hey Everyone....

Just a quick note to let you know I'll be back on the road soon. I am planning on leaving here June 8th. My first stop will be to Westminster, MD. Two of my friends (Deb & Barb) from pogo live there. I also have cousins in Maryland. I hope to see them this time around. My son, Dave will be driving down with me to Maryland. He will then fly home, and I'll move on to PA. I have the last 29 states set up on a tentative route. Of course that will always be subject to change...depending on what is happening at the time!!! LOL

The above pictures are of a baby bunny & humming bird in my mom's yard. The baby bunny is one of 6 babies that live (with mommy & daddy bunny)- under the storage shed. The humming birds are just one of many birds that mom gets at her feeders.

Trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia- Canada

Hey Everyone!!!

This past weekend (5/10 - 5/13), my friend Babs & I went up to Halifax, Nova Scotia. We had a great time!!!

We left Massachusetts Thursday afternoon around 4pm. We drove up to Portland, ME where we stopped for the night. The next morning we got an early start (6:30 a.m.). Our 1st stop was to be in Etna, ME. I have friends there. We went to Diane & Kendall's place. They have a large farm/logging business. We were there to bring 10 lbs of carrots to the 8 horses they have on farm. Both Babs & I are horse lovers!! We spent about an hour & half there. Then we were off for the border.

The trip up was great. We crossed over the border without any problems. It did start to rain, in the evening- but it wasn't too bad. It was strange trying to determine how fast we were to travel!! Thank God that cars come equipped with klm under the mph on dash board! My metric math isn't very good! LOL

We did have a whoops moment when we missed a turn...and it did take us a bit to get back to where we wanted to be- (the exits are far between!!! LOL) but we made it there by 10pm. Though we thought it was 9pm- didn't know about time change!! We went to local pub to get a bite to eat and have a couple of drinks. Everyone was very nice and helpful.

The next morning (Saturday) we got a later start around 11 a.m. We went to find downtown Halifax 1st. We ended up in Yarmouth instead LOL..... but once we got our sense of direction back we found Halifax. It's a quaint city, many older buildings, a few newer ones. There definitely was a Victorian flair to the area...as you'll see in the pictures. We went around the Citadel, but did not go into the fort. It sits high up in a hill that over looks Halifax Harbor. We then made our way to Peggy's Cove. It was so beautiful there. It was a warm sunny day with a light breeze. The waves were crashing over the rocks, and you could hear the sea birds talking away! Peggy's Cove is a small fishing village with a population of 40! There are a few gift shops and a couple of places to eat. This area was very relaxing to be in....a much slower & relaxed atmosphere here. It got to be around 5:30 p.m. and we decided to go back to Halifax for dinner. We ate at a Greek Restaurant called "Opa The Greek Tavern" This place was great!!! It was rated as 3-diamonds in the AAA book...it was that and more! Everything in there was great- the decor, the staff and most notably the food!!! We had a wonderful time that evening! The next morning we were to head back to home.....but we wanted to stay! On Sunday morning we left around 7:30a.m. we had a couple of stops we wanted to make before heading home.

Our 1st stop was to Fundy Bay, in New Brunswick. This park is huge and beautiful. I was looking for a particular section...the one most photographed in advertising, is in this area. We were able, with the help of some locals, to find the exact spot I was looking for. Its located in Hopewell Cape. It's called the "flower pots". The reason it has this name is because the rocks look like flower pots with the trees growing out of the top! LOL This is so pretty. The tides here come in and out every 2hrs!! there are warning signs all over the place telling you about it so you won't get caught off guard and get trapped. When the tide is out you can walk on the oceans floor and see into (the usually) underwater caves! When the tide comes in the water level is 43 feet above the ocean floor....so those rocks that look like flower pots when tide is out are islands when the tide is in!!!! This really is a cool place!!!

On the way to our next stop we saw these HUGE cows- but alas they did not bother us as I had "cow proofed" this vehicle!! (LOL) We also came across a railroad museum in Hillsborough.

We next headed to another tourist site called Magnetic Hill. This is located in Moncton, New Brunswick. It is a water park that has gift shops, restaurants, putt - putt golf ...but there is an attraction here that is so unique- it is the reason most people come here!! It is "The Magnetic Hill" It was discovered in the early 1800's. This hill you drive to and there is a board that gives you instructions on how to enjoy the phenomenon here. You drive to the bottom the of this hill. When you get to the bottom you pull your car over to the left hand side of road. Now you put your vehicle into neutral and take foot off the brake. Your vehicle will go up the hill by itself!!! Now we did this twice...the 1st time Babs & I were both in my SUV. It did go up the hill by itself (with me steering) backwards to the top again. The second time I did it...I had Babs video tape it with my camera....so I have tape of it too !!! LOL It is the weirdest sensation!! To know you are going up a hill with out your foot on the gas!! My SUV got up to 10 mph going back up this hill!! After we finished playing here (lol) we headed back for home. We had a long trip ahead of us. (it's 11hrs- nonstop from Halifax to Mass) The weather was a bit drizzly from time to time until we got close to border. Then it seemed to clear up. We did see a young moose along side of the highway in Maine- munching on some grass!! But none of the wildlife tried to cross while we were driving (Thank God!!!).

We finally landed at Babs at 2:30a.m. -Monday...talk about a longggggggg drive!!! LOL But it was worth it. Hope to do it again when I get back home from walkabout.

Colors of Early Spring in New England

Hey Everyone.......

Well it's been awhile, but I'm backkkkkkk!! LOL

Glad to report all is well in Massachusetts! I am planning a drive to Nova Scotia, Canada next weekend (10th-13th) with my friend Babs. It will take approx. 11 hrs to get there!

The when I return I'll be making final preparations to restart my "walkabout"- around the 1st of June (can't wait....as Willie says: "On the road again!!!").

Spring has finally sprung here! It's so nice to have warm sunny days and cool starry nights.....

We had a bad Nor 'Easter that came thru on the 14th of April. It lasted 4 days and was WILD!!!! Mom and I had gone down to the ocean on the 4th day to see the waves and get pictures. The waves were 12 feet above normal! It was quite the show.

The pictures above are of the following:

(1-2) Are of my brother Wade's new work truck. It is brand new and 4 feet longer than the old one. He tows 18 wheelers- big rigs, and tour type buses. He really is enjoying his new ride!

(3-19) These pictures are of Nantaskett Beach in Hull. These were taken just before the high tide came in. The state police came and sent everyone out of the area just after these pictures....for safety sake. The waves, rocks and debris came over wall during high tide and was causing flooding and a dangerous situation.

(20-66) These pictures are of some of the color of early spring here at home...wanted to share to add some color to your day!

Got my new ride!!

Hi Everybody!!

Today is a sunny but a windy day. It's about 55 out right now with wind gust up to 32 mph!!

Well this will completely update my blog......finally!

I got my new ride!!!!! I was able to get a new vehicle on March 16th. It is a Black 2003 GMC Envoy. It is a sweet SUV!! It's the sports edition, that has everything you could ever possibly want! I was able to get the new ride so quickly with the help of my brother, Wade. Thank you very much Wade!! (Pictures 1-5 are of my new SUV.)

I am planning on being back on the road no later than the first of June 2007. To finish this wonderful journey I have started. This trip has been a wonderful blessing for me. It has helped me in so many ways. I have met some really great people. Made a lot of new friends, reconnected with family, and saw old friends. I have also been able to see many amazing things along the way!!! I was very disappointed when my journey got interrupted, but I always knew I'd be back out there to finish it!!! Right now I need to replace a few things I had to leave out in New Mexico. This will take just a little bit of time. Until I leave the area, I will visit local states and post the pictures on here ( much like I did before I left for my walkabout), so everyone not from this area can see what New England looks like. For those new to the site you can view all older pictures - going back to February 2006 by clicking on the View Archives button (top right of this page). You'll then see a calendar on the right- It will tell you how many postings I made each month. ( For example if you look back to August 2006 you can see the pictures I took of Boston, Plymouth, and Cape Cod.)

So folks ...... keep checking back, and you'll still be able to following along in Panda's Great Adventures!! ( LOL ) Anyone wishing to leave comments- please do- I enjoy reading your feed back.

Now to address the remaining pictures above.... (pictures 6-11) This past Saturday at the new Dunkin Donuts in Rockland Plaza, they had a Boston radio station broadcasting live. They also had the Dunkin Donuts race car there. (If you wanted to pay a fee you could have your picture taken in the car! LOL) I took these pictures for all of my Caffeine Nuts- YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! .... and so do I!! :o) LOL

Leaving Carlsbad 2/28/07

Hey Everyone,

On Wednesday morning (2/28/07) I headed out of Carlsbad. My first destination was going to be Alamogordo. Mom wanted to see if I could find her cousin that she lost touch with. I had to travel through the mountains to get there! It was great to see something other than desert!! LOL I actually got to see some snow- as you'll see in the above pictures.

I made it to Alamogordo, but couldn't find mom's cousin. After taking a break there...I headed north to Albuquerque. I arrived in Albuquerque around 5:30 p.m. As it turned out I should have stopped then for the night, but I wanted to get a few more miles behind me........

About 140 miles outside of Albuquerque is Gallup, NM., at about 8:00 p.m. I ran into a bit of a problem.

Was traveling west on I-40. I was doing the speed limit of 75mph when I came up on a dead cow in my lane- I swerved left to passing lane only to find another dead cow- which I hit. It sent me off the road and onto the median strip. It was a real mess out there. A pick up, and 18 wheeler hit them- got damage- then me, then a RV came along-same thing- then a SUV with 7 month preg girl in it hit them and tipped over on its side- she slide about 50 feet or so and came to rest on its side (drivers side down) about 2' from the back of my car- still the trucks and cars were coming- It took about 5 mins to get people to realize there was something wrong- but it seemed forever before everyone started to slow down!!! I don't think I stopped shaking until the next morning- guess it wasn't my night to die!!! LOL
The car was totaled. I had to ship some of my stuff home and get a flight back to Mass. I received a lot of help from the local Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses in Gallup and also from the Congregation in Albuquerque. A sister from Gallup picked me up Friday morning and brought me to get the boxes at the UPS store. We then went to the car and packed just what I really wanted to keep. She was going to find a home for the rest of my stuff. We then went back to UPS and mailed out 5 boxes for home. She later came back and got me to have dinner with her, her husband and two young daughters. The next morning the same sister was back to pick me up at 6:30a.m., so I could catch the Greyhound bus to Albuquerque. I arrived in Albuquerque at 10 a.m. When I arrived a Witness family was there to meet me - to take me to the airport for my 12:05 flight. I made my flight and arrived in Boston at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. My son Dave picked me up....needless to say I was totally wiped out by then. Now I have to re-group, get another vehicle....cause I'm not done with my walkabout yet!!!!!
I want to take a moment to thank EVERYONE who came to my aid in New Mexico. If it wasn't for your help I would have been in really bad shape. So....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU- VERY MUCH!!!! It is wonderful to belong to such a loving Christian family!

Made it to New Mexico 2/26/07

Hi there.....

Well on Monday, February 26th, I made it to New Mexico. So far it doesn't look much different than Texas!!! LOL

I pulled into a KOA campground around 6pm, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This was a great campground. It even had a hot tub there (which I took advantage of!!!) It was cool to be in the hot tub at night, in the middle of the desert, looking up at the moon and stars, and hearing coyotes in background howling!!!

After a good nights sleep I went out to explore the area. I went to the Meteor State Park. Here they had a small museum with all kinds of info on meteors.....(As those who know me will tell you one of my favorite things to do is watch meteror showers) After looking around museum you take a self guided walk around the area where they found the meteor that hit many years ago.

Then I headed to the Living Desert Zoo. This park has a visitors center that shows about human, wildlife, and plant life from this area. You then take a self guided tour around the park. It really was great to see the plant life and wildlife for the area. There are many signs to inform you about everything you are looking at.

When I finished at the zoo I decided the day was still young and headed for the Caverns. This state park was really great too. These caverns were much bigger and deeper than the ones I saw in Texas. They go down 839 feet below the surface. It really is quite a sight to see these natural formations!!!

Well it had been a long busy day...I ended it with another trip to the hot tub!!! LOL The next morning I was moving on......I'll be back with more on that. Love Donna

Leaving Texas.......

Hey Everyone.....

It was getting to the end of my stay in Texas.....and what a stay it has been!!

I want to take this time to thank EVERYONE who made my stay very special in Texas... To Leeann- THANK YOU VERY MUCH for allowing me to stay with you for those 2 months. It made things a lot easier for me. I enjoyed your company very much!! It was great meeting your mom Cindi too! To "My Army Brats" Jack, Will, Dave, Kody, Ricky,and Fernando- Thanks to you all for the laughs and good times....You are a crazy lot but fun loving group of guys!! To the North Killeen Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses- Thank you for making me feel right at home. I look forward to the day I can come back to visit you all!! To my friend Bud- Thanks for keeping tabs on me and giving me names of interesting places to visit! And finally to my cousins Dawn & Karen- sorry we couldn't catch up with each other- I'll keep in touch and let you know when I get back to TX, maybe we can get together then.........

On Saturday the 24th I left Houston around 3:00 p.m. and headed towards San Antonio. I landed there around 6:30pm and got a room for the night. I was online chatting with friends when my friend Bud came on. We had tried to meet up 3x's since I landed in Texas, but something always seemed to come up. LOL So Bud came over to the hotel and we went out for some coffee and dessert- it was almost 11pm by now. We had a nice time chatting....It was great to meet him in person finally!

The next day I was heading to New Mexico...had a long ways to go before I'd get out of Texas LOL- It's a very big state. Around 5p.m. I ended up in Stockton, Texas for the night. Stopped at a KOA for the night. It was out in the middle of the desert! I'll tell ya - you see a lot at night up in the sky out here!!! The next morning off to NM.

I went to Carlsbad, NM first. This area has a lot of state parks and natural wonders to see. I'll go and get those pictures ready...I'll be back soon- Love Donna

Leaving Killeen- stopping by Houston

Hello,

I was getting ready to leave Killeen. On Thursday the 22nd Leeann invited my "Army Brats" over for dinner so I could say goodbye. We had great food and tons of laughs.....we ended up at Silverwings for some drinks and to play some pool. Then on Friday the 23rd, Leeann & I went to Silverwings to say my goodbyes there. After Leeann & I went out for a bite to eat.

Saturday started out stormy and extremely windy....tornadoes were being reported!!! I guess Texas wanted to say goodbye to me the same way it said hello!!! LOL

It was hard but I said my goodbyes to Leeann & Jack and off I went to Houston. It took me 3 hrs to get there. Houston is located south-east of Killeen.

Houston is a fairly young city- big & clean. But...much like Dallas I wasn't really impressed with Houston. There really much of anything going on there. I arrived around 2pm and there was hardly anyone around!!! Granted there was a rodeo in town, but I really don't think everyone in Houston was at the rodeo!!! I'm use to cities where there is always something going on- especially in the middle of the day! You'll see what I mean when you look at the pictures.

2/21/07 Fredericksburg & Hunt Texas

Hi again.....

Once I left the LBJ ranch I continued west. I was looking for Stonehenge II. Someone had built a replica of Stonehenge- out in the middle of Texas!! LOL

This part of Texas is known as Hill Country, and yes there are hills!! LOL It was good to see hills and ponds and trees....something except the open ranges I've been looking at these past few weeks!

I first drove thru a town called Fredericksburg. This is a quaint town that has many shops lining both sides of downtown. If you are an antique buff- then this is the place to come!! Once outside of Fredericksburg it's mostly country side with occasional small towns. I came across something that I found funny. They have these "dip" signs every now & then....It is where the road goes dow into a gully. In these gullies they have measuring post- marked up to 5 feet high. This is so when you are driving along and you see a "puddle"- you know how deep it is, and then you decide if you car or truck can can handle the depth or if you should turn around!! LOL ****Suggestion if water is over 1' then PLEASE turn around!!!! Or you may float away!!******

I finally found Ingram/Hunt area and the Stonehenge II. It is on F.M. (farm road) 1340, in Hunt off Texas 39. This Stonehenge is an exact replica of the one in Salisbury Plain, England. It is 60% as tall as the original and 90 % as large in circumference as original. There are two Easter Island- type statues also at this same location.
